When Penelope Shackelford asks if you want to be her date for the SOCO Uncorked event (or any for that matter), there is no answer to give other than ‘yes.’ The intriguing writer has more than been around the block; she’s matriarch of the neighborhood and everyone at the Mix knows and adores her. I’m elated that our paths crossed there and have morphed our relations from acquaintance to client to teacher to friend.

So I joined her, camera in one hand, wine glass in the other, for the second annual food and wine festival at SOCO’s OC Mix. Please visit her blog to read [a more well written recap of] the story. And be sure to scroll all the way through to view the awesome dance party that broke out at the end of the evening, thanks to Matt Mauser and the Tijuana Dogs. Thursday night entertainment at its finest.

I have always wanted to be a mother. From the time I was a little girl, I looked up to my own mother and honored her in all the most wonderful ways. She was my goddess. The most beautiful woman in the world. The most loving, caring and giving human that ever existed. Of course, I wanted to grow up to be just like her.

And in some ways, I hope I have. I do not have children yet, and I may never, but I can still honor my own mother by showing the love and beauty to others that she showed to me. I try to do that for her, for others, every damn day.

While my decision to bust out some kids has yet to be made, I am sometimes deeply moved and inspired by other woman who remind me of the goddess who raised me (who ideally is also hibernating and ripening inside). This was the case instantaneously with Alissa.

She hit me up about a month ago to take some portraits of her darling Reese for her first birthday and when we met the first time, I saw it right away. And it wasn’t just the gorgeous light that lit up the canyon with all that Palm Sunday glory, it was the light in Alissa’s eyes that made this session so special. The love she has for her daughter, the wonder, the care, the selflessness, was so apparent in every glance toward her and every glance at her husband too. And their sweetest Reese shined right back.

It’s people like these three and love like theirs that remind me of the goddess inside of all of us. That the truth is there and honest love can prevail, despite all the dark and dirty that tends to muck it up. So cheers to Alissa, Joe and their precious Reese. Thank you for sharing a little bit of your light with me last week. Thanks for inspiring me to share the loveliest parts of me. And happiest of Aprils as you celebrate Reese’s first year developing into her very own goddess.

The Gonzalez vow renewal was an event to remember for sure! The rain came and washed away the sunshine but the entire family showed up ready to celebrate anyway. They gathered on the chilly Saturday to honor Maria and Isaac on their 40th wedding anniversary.

May God grant them many more years together!

Emily recently starred in a theater production after which her aunt said, This kid is going somewhere. So to help her along, we got her headshots done and off she’s running with an agency to book her gigs.

And with a face [and attitude] like that, how could she not be going somewhere and somewhere great!???

Go, Emily, go!

You may or may not have noticed a slight drop off here in content. That’s not to say I haven’t been busting my booty for Lovato Images, because I have; there are some amazing things in that pipeline and much greatness to share. I have had a weighted focus on some other lines lately though…

One such line is that in which I’ve been walking at Cypress College. I started instructing there a year ago and am so excited about all that avenue of my future holds. Stay tuned for some exciting news on that street.

For now I’ll leave you with a thought that hopefully lifts your spirit as it did mine:

“Sometimes one waits too long for the perfect moment before snapping the picture.

You never realize that all you needed was to change perspective.”
