I am a traveler. Through and through. In ten years I’ve been to sixteen countries and I am beyond excited to see where this next decade on this new passport will take me.

There is so much about traveling that I love. I feel overwhelmed as memories and lessons and visions rush through me right now. I am so little and insignificant, yet through my experiences, I am SO full.

One of my favorite things about traveling is how I’m able to stay in the moment. Though the days are long gone from hard to find ‘internet cafes’ and cell service so pricey it was out of the question, I still prefer to stay unplugged. Sure I’ll check in at night to email Mom and let her know I’m alive, but there’s something to be said about not being connected to our phones/internet/digital world. It opens us up to the moment we’re in…the dirt sifting up from the road on the sticky breeze, the smell of the market as the shoeless child wanders with inquisitive eyes, the Finnish man dining alone at the next table, the sound of rain drops falling in the graveyard…

We don’t have to be in another country to enjoy these things. They happen every day. Every moment. Right there in front of us. Take a moment to unplug. Next time your friend leaves to use the loo on your lunch date, don’t pick up your phone. Look around. Listen. You might be amazed at what you see.

Half Moon Bay Engagement Pictures

Driving along the windy highway approaching the coast, the trees started closing in on the road and the sky sank closer with its heavy white haze. Half Moon Bay was near, and the clean air offered a fresh anticipation for the engagement photos we were about to create.

I met Amy and Yashar in the tiny town and was immediately swept up in all the charm. The location was delightful with all its quaint little nooks and crannies but it was the couple I was stoked on most.

Amy and Yashar are a magnetic and dynamic pair. They’ve got huge hearts and happy minds and it’s obvious within minutes of meeting them. So there I was in this darling little coastal town with this beautiful couple and I felt so full. It’s just refreshing to be around people like Amy and Yash. Then, engagement photos are some of my favorites and when creating them with amazing people like these two, it’s not like work. It’s like exploring a new place with two new friends and the creation that comes with that is always some really good stuff.

Family Photography at The Catholic Worker

For the better part of the last decade, my good photog friend and I have been packing up all our photography gear a couple times a year and setting up ‘shop at the Catholic Worker. It’s a big historic home in Santa Ana that has become, through the hard work and compassionate hearts of many, a safe haven and loving shelter for women.

So we bring our gear, set up, dispute over how we lit it last, set up again and open the doors of our portrait studio to everybody. We like to go on Sunday mornings, because the home opens up to anyone and everyone and serves breakfast to all. We like Sundays because–in addition to the women that live there–it’s their kids, their boyfriends, friends, sponsors, supporters, servers and even foes needing shelter themselves that come in to be photographed. It’s you. It’s me. It’s everyone.

Over the years we’ve discovered that the service we provide is not so much in the portraits we take and the prints we deliver, but rather, it’s the mere fact that we’re human beings, there, with four ears and two hearts opened wide. We chat. We listen. We shake hands. We hug. We heal. And we create some beautiful portraits during the process.

Some of these people are helpers. Some of these people are healers. All of these people are needing healing themselves. Like you. Like me. Like everyone.

I love it when a photo shoot begins and my subject is just a little nervous. It happens all the time, not just with boudoir pictures, and I relish in the trust I receive. Very few people are comfortable when a big camera is in their face and I just adore helping transform that to confidence.

Katelyn wasn’t so nervous. But she wasn’t exactly comfortable at first either. And who would know it by these fabulous shots?! No one (well until I just told you, oops). She just SHINES and I am so happy we were able to capture not just her gorgeous exterior that day, but also some of the beauty inside.

Boudoir photos have little to do with the removal of clothing and everything to do with the breaking down of barriers… thank you for breakdown, Katelyn. You’re stunning.

George Key Ranch Rustic Wedding

Breanna and Cameron’s wedding was the perfect mix of youth and maturity. It was well balanced between rugged ranch and classic elegance and was a beautiful blend of delicate emotions and strong values. It was full of their energy which was, how do you say…? Oh, AWESOME.

The young couple started their journey six years ago at their senior high school prom and haven’t looked back since. They have grown together faithfully and freely, living life to the fullest and it shows. There’s a brilliance in Breanna’s laugh when she’s beside Cameron. Then there’s the authenticity in his eyes when he looks at her and it’s easy to see these two are in it for the long run.

Their wedding day was pure perfection, with the softest most lovely light spilling over them and the warmest most invested friends and family wrapping around. The DIY details were personal and created with purpose and the style was perfectly Breanna and Cameron. They danced and toasted beneath a giant oak tree that afternoon as we all looked on inspired. Because how can you not want to do more and be more when you see a couple like this? The energy just ignites little flames of awesome in everyone they touch.
