Emily and Colby are a pretty cute couple with a seemingly standard story: both in their 20s, both working towards furthering their careers, an active pair caught in a tremendous love storm now ready to commit to marriage and building a life together.

But what’s not standard is the way Colby looks at Emily with complete love and patience and adoration. His eyes just light up when he looks at her and she beams beautifully right back. Also not so standard, is the way Emily relaxes in his arms, with a confidence and clarity that conveys a deep love, unknown to us outsiders. Emily and Colby are a pretty unique match for sure, and neither had to say a thing to communicate it.

On their first date, two years ago, the pair went hiking behind their houses and did some ‘extreme hammocking’ and took pictures. Basically, they’ve got this really groovy hammock that can be hung anywhere, so they went somewhere random and hung it. I had to see this for myself, so as soon as Emily brought it up, I was stoked for an extreme hammock appearance in their engagement photos. So as the orange sun slowly sank one Sunday, we met in Anaheim Hills where it all started to document the beginning of what is sure to be a tremendous love story.

Fiona is a little cream puff of a person with spiced icing so perfectly placed, you want to eat her with a miniature silver spoon, savoring each sweet little bite. She is an adorably tiny human and her size is totally deceiving of how powerfully she can steal your heart. Trust.

Naturally, I was thrilled when her parents asked me to shoot their family photography again because everyone needs a little extra cream puff in their life, right? And of course she was darling with her little bow and the desire to know everything all at once. She wandered around, picked at the ground and warmed our morning. Fortunately, between her exploratory adventures around her San Juan Capistrano neighb, I was able to photograph some nice family portraits. Who knew a cream puff could be so inquisitive and attentive at the same time?!

Fiona is many things, people. I think mostly though, she is Queen of her Daddy’s heart.

I read a book last year that really made me re-evaluate the spirit of thanks giving. One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp is a beautiful lyrical lesson, thick with Christian values and a focus on God, so I wouldn’t recommend it to just anyone. Not everyone drinks the same cup of tea, but I think we all can learn so I’d like to share a lesson on thankfulness here.

Voskamp’s story started rough: she watched her sister get crushed by a truck as a child, resulting in a psychiatric hospitalized mother and a dark father. She has known suffering since her beginnings but refuses to count the grains of grit above the granules of goodness. So the farmer’s wife and mother of four decides to start a list of all the gifts she’s thankful for in her life. She counts them throughout the book and it reminds me so much of the simple sweetness in my own life: the smell of my own bed, painted finger nails, sunlight through my window, homemade soup in a steaming bowl, waking to rain drops, a freshly mopped floor and vintage tile in my kitchen. In this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, we discover the life we’ve always wanted.

Now I count my own blessings regularly. I can’t say I do it every day, though I know I’d be a much happier person if I did. But simply stopping here and there to identify and appreciate all the gifts in your life inevitably shifts your focus to the positive, or rather, puts a positive light on all that’s already in front of you.

So my wish for you this Thanksgiving, is to carry the mindful, heartfelt appreciation that we stop to focus on today with you throughout the rest of the year and into the next. Start a list if you so dare, but try to remember to slow down once in awhile and count the many gifts in your life. I guarantee you’ll wish less, and be genuinely happy more.
