Mariana Bell | SXSW

I’m not really sure how to describe Mariana Bell, other than in a few short experiences.

I first met her in her home, invited as a ‘plus 1’ to a small dinner party she was hosting with her boyfriend. Bell greeted me, the new girl, with a huge smile and warm embrace. She laughed honestly, talked openly, and shared freely. Conversation was engaging and fun. The food was spectacular and Bell rocked the hostess posish with a simple but elegant evening I’ll never forget.

Then a few weeks later, I heard her perform and I was totally moved. The woman’s got some pipes, in a serene and smells-like-home kinda way. Her voice is similar to her personality: sincere, attractive and flowing with such a dynamic range, you can’t help but feel compelled to be more dynamic yourself.

Shortly thereafter, I fell in love with her second album, Push. The lyrics are, again, much like Bell herself: honest, open, and palpable to the point that she makes it easy to want to fall in love again, no matter how many times you may have been hurt before.

I was totally stoked when I found out Bell would be playing at South by Southwest this past weekend when I was also to be in Austin. I made no set plans that date, except to be at her show. Because with a woman like Mariana Bell, any chance to know her a little better seems it might present a chance to better yourself as well.
