…not really, but kinda.

Since I first picked up my camera, I’ve shot anything and everything possible, especially when the shoots involving money started rolling in (duh). As my years on the job have increased and my skills and knowledge sets have refined, I have narrowed down my services offered into a tighter and more concentrated body of work.

There’s still a lot of work though! People come at me with inquiries of all kinds still and while I’m able to refer them out appropriately when the work is better suited for another, I’m also able to concentrate on the clients I can serve best, doing what I do best.

So! To better serve up the awesome (and concentrated) clients I have, I’ve separated my portfolios online now, with a whole separate site (face) dedicated to my commercial work. That includes real estate property photography, professional head shots and product photography and it can be viewed here. Cruise through and let me know what you think!

I suppose this is probably my last post of 2011! Changing faces, changing times….Happy New Year, all!

I made a goal at the beginning of this year to vacation in New York City in December. Well, we’ve got just a few days left of this month and this year, and guess what?! I’m off to the Big Apple!

I saved all year for this…financially, professionally, mentally, emotionally…and I’m ready to let go of all the good and bad from 2011 and ring in 2012 with a big, beautiful bang. I will not be working a lick, will hardly be checking email, and I probably won’t be answering the phone much either. So, if you need to get a hold of me, do so however, and expect to hear back from me after my return on the 3rd. If it’s an emergency, contact Leo or Carol or Muk. If you don’t know how to contact them, it must not be an emergency for me!

I’ve loved all the ups and downs of 2011. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye. But I’m moving on, moving up, moving in every way positive towards growth and progression this next year. I hope you’ll come along and allow me to share some of it. I’m thankful you’ve been here to share with me thus far.

But for now, I’m leavin! on a jetplane! I know that I won’t be back again…til…next year! Have a great weekend, folks!

The Hsu’s were married 40 years ago today and to celebrate, their children threw them a beautiful and intimate dinner party at Anqi at South Coast Plaza last month. It was a lovely event, including toasts from their best man and maid of honor (and granddaughter!), a cake cutting, a first dance (which they never got at their wedding) and endless laughs and love.

All the toasts were given in Chinese, so I couldn’t understand the words their friends were sharing, but I understood the sentiment clearly. The Hsu’s are a special couple that have created a special family with their children and their body of friends. Fifty of their best showed up to honor them and celebrate with them, because we all know 40 years of marriage is no easy feat! But the Hsu’s make it seem natural and right. It was so fabulous to be a part of their party.

So as we all prepare to raise our own glasses this weekend to celebrate the beginning of another year, let’s pause for a moment to celebrate all the years passed and all we’ve been able to celebrate together. Cheers to Hsu’s, cheers to you!

“Honestly, Christmas is kinda tough,” he said to me and it stopped me short. Christmas is always so easy though, I thought. Christmas is the most awesome, lovely lazy day, with family and friends and lounging and loving and sharing in peace. I didn’t understand.

He went on to explain the difficulty of timing and driving and cooking and splitting of families and presents for his new kids and handling her dogs and mom’s boyfriend and getting grandma home by bed time. I immediately understood.

My family’s always had it easy: just the four of us, sleeping in, eating a beautiful breakfast, sharing gifts, sharing laughs and sharing the most peaceful day of the year. It had never occurred to me that it’s not as peaceful for everyone. Then peace flew out the window on Christmas Day and I felt some toughness of my own. The holidays can be tough, no doubt, and there’s nothing wrong with that as long as we remember that being together, no matter what the circumstances, is the best gift.

Today I drew myself a bath and soaked with appreciation for the gift of my family and all the times we’ve spent together. But it was so nice to be alone again.

Venezia

is old. Gentle. Soft…ly lit. The light in Venezia wraps around you like a silk scarf, softly and with a cool sweep. It kisses your skin with grace and whispers in your ear to stay for more. And I turn the corner and it’s dark. But the light meets me through the next turn and whispers to me again.

I pray.

Turn away.

Then pray.

Turn yet another corner and wander astray.

Then I turn again and the light bounces off a window, a wall, a canal corridor…and I start to inch back to the softness, back to the Grace.

Cause even the harsh light that burns and cuts deep shadows into the folds–can be soft and sweet if we allow it. If we can help mold it; help ease it into our stories told.

All is Light. And Venice helped show me that.
