Karoline and Andrew. Married in Rome. The experience of a lifetime. For them, and for me too, obvs.

We showed up to the small hotel at first to meet the bride. She was excited. But relaxed. Ready.

But not really ready, duh. She is a woman on her wedding day, after all. So Liz (my fabulous sidekick shooter) and I decided to scope out the sitch. So out on the cobblestone streets we found ourselves, checking out the hotel (reception), the centuries-old basilica (ceremony), and then the Colosseum (portraits). No big deal. Just a typical day at work in Rome.

Then we met up with Andrew, his brothers and Karoline’s and now his son. They all looked dashing in their snazzy suits, although a little hot. ‘I don’t know how these Italian men do it everyday!’ Andrew said, wiping sweat from his brow. They were all excited though and ready to rock this Roma nozze.

The time finally came and Karoline’s father walked her down the aisle towards her grinning groom, standing at the most beautiful altar I’d ever seen. Old Roman Catholic art adorned every inch of that House and you could just feel God’s presence as Karoline and Andrew entered together into Holy Matrimony, a stunning sacrament that took on an entirely new meaning within those historic walls.

The reception was a candlelit dinner with their 25 closest family and friends on a rooftop overlooking ancient ruins. Intimate. Romantic. Beautifully bonding for us all.

During dinner, Karoline’s maid of honor told me a story about when Karoline and Andrew were first dating. Karoline was ready to ask her son, Alexis, what he thought of ‘her friend’ Andrew. Alexis, 6 at the time, responded with ‘I want to call him Dad!’ My heart melted and I was so happy to have documented such a special union for such an incredible family.

St. Paul’s Festival of Hearts Gala. An evening to come together and give. An evening to get dressed up and dance. An evening to enjoy our community and our blessings, and share them with others.

It’s a formal charity event that my church puts on every year. It’s something we all look forward to every year. This year though, was quite different because my mom co-chaired it. She basically put the whole thing together, with the help of her co-chair and many others of course. Including me. And my dad. And everyone who’s been around her the past few months. It’s been quite a task.

And a task quite worth taking. The community at St. Paul’s is unlike any I’ve ever known. It’s a group of people, a family that I’ve come to appreciate beyond any other community to which I belong. These people are strong individuals, happy and committed couples and focused families that always seem to care more about others than they do themselves. So to experience a fine evening such as the FOH with them and watch everyone laugh and hug and dance and then give to the three charities that support those way less fortunate than us, is a beautiful thing to be a part of. (<-yes I’m ending a sentence in a preposition, don’t hate)

I agreed to photograph the event, specifically, portraits during cocktail hour with proceeds benefiting St. Paul’s. So I set up my ‘photo booth’ in the corner and did mini-portrait sessions of all the families interested. It was so fun! Everyone looked fabulous and it was so great to see everyone enjoying themselves at the event my mom worked so hard to coordinate.

So that was my weekend. Setting up for for FOH, then shooting it and enjoying it too, of course. My mom said she and Mona (the co-chair) slipped into the ballroom a few minutes before the doors opened to say a quick prayer. Then God came back at them with His blessings and abundance to support their request. The numbers aren’t in yet, but this committee member, donor, vendor and grateful guest would venture to say that it was a rock out bomb awesome success.

For all your FOH goers, portraits will be available later this week online. I’ll do another post to notify you! Thanks!

The Rice girls are a beautiful and boisterous bunch: Bennett June, 2, Harper Grace, 4, Finley Tyler, 6, and leader of the pack, Mama Brooke. Daddy Travis is one lucky man, I must say.

Especially because he finally has himself a son! Little Vaughn Patrick was born last week and the Rice family finally has its baby boy. I’m so happy for them!

A few days before I left for Italy, I met Brooke and the girls at Peter’s Canyon for some lifestyle portraits while she was still pregnant. We’re going to do a full family portrait sesh soon with Vaughn and Travis so stay tuned for that.

For now! Get a kick outta these girls! Cause that’s what I can’t help but do every time I’m around them. They all have personality raging out of every pore and I am just charmed and entertained and swollen up with love every time I get to spend time with them. Finley is the sweet and sometimes shy oldest who asks before she does. Harper G is the bombshell booger of a middle child that dives head first into anything that sounds like fun. Bennie June is the determined Taurus baby who was walking at 8 months and is always in the tiny center of whatever mix.

Watch out little Vaughn. Get those elbows up. You’ve got some bubbly girl power to learn how to bounce around!

This isn’t the best shot I took while in Tuscany. It’s not even one of the nicest hillsides. But for some reason, I’m drawn to it.

Tuscany was everything I thought it’d be and nothing at the same time. The air was crisp and clean and quiet. The mornings were serene and solitary and swept with the most lovely light I’d ever seen. The people were charming, happy and seemingly cherishing every moment they had together and with us.

Then there was our group. There was trouble sleeping. There was rushing. There was refusing. There was an hour of car sickness I’ll never forget. It seemed to me as though the four of us were totally present, yet we were also totally still wrapped up in our regular lifestyles we left back home. It was an interesting juxtaposition to be a part of and observe.

So this shot was taken out the car window as we left Siena, a lovely little medieval city which, in my opinion, we spent far too little time. I snapped off several frames as we skirted back to our bed and breakfast 50km down the road. I dragged the shutter. I didn’t look through the viewfinder. I let my fingers do what they wanted as the hillsides and cypress trees slid by. So when I saw this frame, relatively sharp, decently composed and slashed with a ray of hopeful light, I stopped. Thunk. And thanked the Creator for creating such beauty in land, in mentality and in the ability to articulate and appreciate the differences between them all.

I try to always ask my clients to send me a quick snapshot of their enlargements and canvases hung on their walls, so I can see how fabulous they look in their space. I already know how fabulous they look in real life and in the images we created together, but I wanna see them all did up on their own walls, ya know!

Well I shot a family portrait for the Karims a few years ago, before this little [trying to be] tradition took effect. I went over to their house a few weeks ago for a glass of vino before my voyage to Italy (yeah, I drink wine with my clients, who are also often my friends, or soon thereafter become friends…life is way too good) and stumbled across their walls…

I was totally stoked to see their 16×20 canvas of their family portrait  framed and stationed elegantly on their mantle! Look how awesome it looks! I just had to take a quick shot (with my iPhone, one of my favorite cameras right now) and share. Enjoy! Happy Friday!
