Labor Day weekend. A weekend I look forward to every year.

Not because I take Monday off. Because honestly, for as long as I can remember, I’ve worked it.

I look forward to this weekend because it wraps up the summer with a seedless watermelon colored bow. It cools the sweat stained afternoons like a cold glass of tart lemonade. It fills the belly like a burger from my backyard grill. It’s stars and stripes. Bikinis and boots. Laughter and lounging. It’s a time to celebrate family and friends and all the goodness we work so hard to support. It’s a time to kick up your feet and appreciate life for a moment.

Most of us are just happy to get an extra day off work or school. But do me a favor, and take a moment this weekend to stop and count a few blessings. Most of us are so richly blessed we don’t take enough time to stop and appreciate it all. Our lives are so full of goodness. Take a moment this weekend to reflect on all the fruits of your labor…and enjoy it.

Magic - A nicely written reminder Jackie, thank you! xoxo

Magic - One of my top two favorites Jackie! (Not counting of my own family of course!) XO

Mary was a fit of nerves the whole week before her wedding. No second thoughts or anything crazy, she was just nervous.

Miguel was nothing but ready. Standing tall and strong like usual, Miguel was straight up suave in his suit as he gathered his things to head to the church to marry the love of his life.

The girls hustled in a bustle of tulle, curls and lip gloss as they arrived a few minutes late to Cornerstone Christian Worship Center. The chapel. Where the bells were already ringing.

As Mary finally walked down the aisle towards the love of her life, you could see the butterflies lift off and leave her unsettled tummy. She relaxed immediately upon making eye contact with Miguel. Her face softened. Her heart warmed. You could see it. She was ready.

Tear soaked vows and precious stoned symbols of eternity sealed the deal. And Mary and Miguel were made one.

“Pray for them,” Mary’s dad said in his welcome speech at the reception, a request that sent a shiver through my body. Because to me, a union strengthened by prayer and God’s love is the type of union that can stand the test of time. Through all the ups and downs, a union centered around God will stand tall and strong. And there’s nothing to be nervous about that.

Sometimes we find ourselves caught in a slump. Halted. Idling. Wondering why we are where we are…unmotivated to move forward.

Sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroads. Unsure. Unknowing. Confused about where we should go…lacking confidence to make a move.

We’ve all been there. We all know how this feels. But how many of us have had the clarity and courage to actually take a step and make something happen?

I’m sure many, but today I have to highlight one: Miss Hannah Patzke.

I met Hannah last year at London’s Heathrow airport. We were both a bit quiet at first. Weary from hours of travel. Musing on the many hours ahead. We spent two weeks together on the other side of the world, helping others in a way we never knew could, pushing ourselves to physical and emotional levels we never knew we had. In that other world, it was easy to look back over here to California and see the sloth of our slumps, our continuing crossroads and all the stuff we knew we should change.

So coming home, Hannah’s personal and professional life were seeking stimulation. The old way just wasn’t working anymore. As the year wore on, she realized this more and more. She sought more and more. And after countless conversations and hours and hours of thorough thinking, Hannah decided she needed to make a move.

So in ten days Hannah will move to Honduras to utilize her nursing skills working in a clinic. She’ll live there for the next year helping people in ways she couldn’t have done here in the States. She’ll push herself to new physical and emotional levels she’s yet to discover.

I’m so proud of her. Proud because she’s thinking beyond herself. Proud because she’s pushing herself. Proud because she’s taking a step towards change that’s bigger and better than most of us could even consider.

As she leaves behind the life she knew, we’re going to celebrate the shedding of her skin, so to speak, with a styled portrait session in Santa Cruz on Tuesday. Stay tuned for images of turbulence, transformation and good times to come…

Can we talk about my sense of humor for a minute?

First of all, I think it’s fantastic. I laugh at my myself almost everyday. I’m constantly entertained by my thoughts and actions. I’m pretty consistently having myself a good ole time.

Back in college I took a class called The American Humor. Our first assignment on our first day of class, was to come in the next day and do something humorous. I went home and immediately quizzed my family and friends on good jokes to tell and funny things to say. I was quite interested to find that I’m not a funny person. Everyone agreed.

But people laugh at me! People laugh with me! I always have a good time, and so do most the people I’m around. I swear I have a good sense of humor; I swear I’m a good time.

After that assignment though, I realized my humor doesn’t dwell in jokes or funny phrases I spit. My humor is more a state of mind…

My humor lies in finding the Light in most situations. My humor rests on the fact that fun is just an attitude shift away. My humor relies on the viewpoint that life is good and making the best of every experience is the very best thing we as humans can do.

So with that being said, sometimes I wish I were funny. Sometimes I wish I could tweet things that make people “lol” or bust out a witty comment that brings laughing tears to a circle of fellow cocktail-party-goers’ eyes. But I don’t and I typically can’t.

But I’m a good time. I swear. See…they were laughing with me (at me, actually, in this case). And I know they were definitely having a good time. Cause it’s all a state of mind.

As a make-up artist, Mary has creativity tucked up every ruffled sleeve. Besides her daring and flawless shadow and rouge application, the girl’s got ideas that’ll make your creative seeking cheeks flush in excitement.

Such was the case for me when she suggested the second location for her engagement session with Miguel: The LACMA. So we all met up in L.A. for a portrait session to illuminate some ideas about fashion, art, companionship and making-up a life of love to lead with the perfect partner.

And Mary and Miguel really are perfect partners together. As fun and funky as Mary’s style may come to be, firm and fabulous is Miguel styled right back. They create a good balance, an excellent ebb and flow and are able to maintain a faithful friendship that just fits. As sweetly suited for one another as they seem to be, I believe that you don’t just find the perfect partner, you become one.

And I’m so happy that Mary and Miguel have become that for one another. So excited to shoot their marriage celebration this coming weekend!

ps–big thanks to the little Lola for being such a darling little doggie during our shoot! so glad she had her nails done, it made all the diff!

    Michelle - Jackie,
I am stunned, when I really should just expect amazing, jaw-dropping photos from you. The pic with the columns; the one with them in shadow; and the one with the Chihuahua and her paws are on their hands, FABULISH!! That’s fabulous and Delish! I love and admire you and am forever blessed that you shot our wedding. We’ll have to book a session with you to photograph us and our dogs. Take care and keep on bringing the light.
