Julian hit me up a few weeks ago to freshen up his portfolio with some new headshots. He’s been out of the acting world for some years now and is ready to jump back in. He had a good and stable job but it wasn’t satisfying him in the way he knew it should. He wanted more. So he walked away and finally started walking towards The More…

I am so proud of him for taking such a leap. How many of us are stagnant? How many of us saunter through our days lacking motivation or stimulation or a challenge that we don’t even know we lack?  We sit and look out the window. We anxiously await 5pm and count down the minutes as it draws near. We wish for the weekend every Monday…wish for happy hour every hour…

Well Julian’s wishing is over. His doing is now. He picked up the phone and called me and we hit up my favorite nooks and crannies of Old Towne Orange and danced around together in the delectable light. Like a crystal’s reflection on a lath and plaster wall, we twittered between possibility and probability and let the Light shimmer through us. Doing, doing…done.

Quite often I get asked to ‘bring a camera along,’ or that I ‘should shoot it,’ when social/fun outings are being planned. I call these outings ‘play’ times. I work a lot. Then I play. Quite often, play dates include a camera. I do after all, have at least one camera body on me AT ALL TIMES. And I often like to take pictures, for FUN.

However, many people don’t realize that photography is my WORK, my JOB, my ONLY support and source of income. Therefore, even when I bring a camera in my purse or have one slung around my neck on some fun play date, when I go back home, to my office, to my desk, it very quickly becomes work again.

This is not to say that I don’t love what I do. I LOVE WHAT I DO! I love wrapping my hands around a camera, I love looking through the viewfinder and framing up a slice of life and creating a compelling composition of a single moment to preserve it forever. I love connecting with people and I love the way that people open up to me through the camera in ways I could have never dreamed up without one. I love creating images that help people see the world as beautiful as I see it. I love the stimulation that imagery brings to my mind, body and soul. I love referrals and inquiries and emails and meetings and projections and planning and invoicing and admin managing and even a little financing (these days, only thanks to my fab book keeper Andie!). I love the entire process of being a photographer and putting it to work through Lovato Images.

But yawl gotta know, it is a lot of work. My daily to-do lists are continually filled with too much to do. My master task list is perpetually plugged with new projects and new goals to get done. I have 100 things to do 100% of the time. And I need to support myself. Financially. And Lovato Images is the only way I do it.

So when I shoot something for fun, please understand that it means something to me. It is important to me. Most often, it is of great value to me. But I need to take care of me first…and that includes a sharp focus on the finances, unfortunately…and that means that the fun play photography most often gets pushed aside.

These cool cats below are one such group of fab friends that understand this about me…and waited forever for a small set of images I shot before one of their shows last year. Late, but worth the wait!

Ian - Cool pic. Can’t wait for the album and west coast tour! Keep on rockin Rooz Dawg!

The Picture of the Every Couple of Days started back in 2008 when my dear friend Roozie moved to Colorado. I had done a photo shoot with some dogs and knew he’d be interested to see so I sent him an email with one or two images. He was thrilled and said something along the lines of ‘Your photography is awesome. I need to see more of it. You should send me a picture of the day.’ To which I responded, ‘How about a picture of the every couple of days?’ And thus, The Picture of the Every Couple of Days was born.

The recipient list has grown since then. I started with 5 or 6 of my friends that lived across the States and then I started an email campaign where people can sign up. Because of the fabulous feedback I constantly get, I decided I want to share more of the love!

The Picture of the Every Couple of Days will run a contest for the next two weeks so that whoever refers a friend to sign up (or signs up on their own) will be entered to win a $50 American Express gift card. Picture of the Every Couple of Days fun!

It is just that – a fun picture that I’ve taken and really like – that I send out every couple of days. It’s just a fun quick glimpse into my work. A short email that provides inspiring imagery to your doorstep. You take a quick peek. Enjoy. And go about the rest of your day. Plain and simple.

So if you enjoy the Picture of the Every Couple of Days, please retweet or like this blog above, or email a friend or two who you think might enjoy it too. In this month of love, folks, share the love! And an Amex gift card could be yours!

Here are some of the very first Pictures of the Every Couple of Days from back in the days of 2008…

Michelle - Knew the back story, but truly enjoyed seeing some of the older images. The one of the boxer with the fluffy white dog is so cute. The photo of the building is awesome. You’re such a talented photographer; so gifted and yet humble and kind. I wish you much success in 2011!

Jeff B. - U r soooo talented Jackie; many photographers have great technical skills, but what sets U apart is ur imagination (as in focusing on the feet of the baby) – keep following ur dreams & I wish u much success & happiness always……

Chris and Cynthia are one of those couples that are better together than they are apart. They are one of those couples that when they’re standing side by side, could really accomplish anything they want.

They’re one of those couples that thinks things through. They are deliberate and determined and it’s undeniable that they are both on the path to greatness. Cynthia will be a dermatologist. Chris will be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Just wait. You’ll see.

I met them outside the Montage in Laguna, as that was where they shared their first date last year. Deliberate. The weather was a little unpredictable, with a flurry of tiny raindrops, gusts of cold wind then moments of bright and radiant sun, but Chris and Cynthia rolled with it like it was nothing. Determined. A rainbow lit up the sky at one point and we all felt life’s luck wrap itself around us. I was inspired by this driven pair so I hopped on their path and turned towards greatness myself. Undeniable greatness.
