sometimes i feel like a deep, sensitive, connected woman. who breathes deep and easy. who understands. who knows.

other times i feel so small. i think of africa. i think of bangkok. i think of that little tiny dirt road in mexico that i traveled to get to that old couple’s shack of a home…and it’s those times that i think i know nothing.

i do know, that when i pick up my camera, i see far more brilliantly than i ever have without it. my fingers immediately shift gears and glide lightly but purposefully over the buttons on my camera. my focus fades in and out between what i see, what i need and what layers are being peeled back between me and what sits before me.

i snuggle up in the layers that are being peeled back. mine. theirs. now ours. opening up slowly but surely to one another and the experience of working together through my camera. if the eyes are a window to the soul, my camera is a double doorway.

and this little tiny girl of a person who knows little but feels much, is privileged enough to keep being welcomed in through doorway after doorway.

ceci guasti - Beautiful!! Love it!!

Kan - This is so poetic. I LOVE the angle you look at life from. You know, when God blesses you with the eyes to see the beauty the way you do, things tht matter, matter. And things that don’t matter, don’t.

When Ryan first called me to book a shoot with his girlfriend Bao, I was immediately engaged with the enthusiastic voice on the other end of the line. Ryan’s attitude was positive and contagious right away and I knew he was going to be fun to work with. (yes, I just ended a sentence with a preposition. deal.)

I wasn’t quite prepared for the amount of fun and awesomeness that resulted from our hour together, though…

We had some issues finding the same location, so thanks to my handy-dandy google maps, I found them and Ryan was waiting outside the car to flag me down. When Bao got out of the car, I was immediately taken back by her tiny frame and stunning features played up by her FAB style. She was a little quiet at first, so I continued chatting with Ryan to start…

We walked down a path to find a good place and the moment the two got in front of my camera, their personalities shone sweeter and warmer than the sinking sun.

So like, duh, we have two beyond beautiful people here. So obviously they made my job easy to make beautiful images. But more than their exteriors, the benevolence and joy in their spirits create a draw and drama to this set of images beyond others I’ve shot before. Ryan and Bao are spirited people…and instead of trying to describe the beauty of their spirits in words…I’ll let the images do the talking…

Traci - beautiful shots J. Ryan looks so happy! Great seeing pictures of an old friend done by an amazingly talented 1st friend!

Liz called me and said she wanted to take some portraits with her poodle. I was immediately obsessed with the job and anxiously awaited its arrival on my calendar.

I have my own poodle. And to say I’m obsessed with her would be 100% accurate according to the dictionary: obsess [uh b-ses] –verb (used with object) 1. to dominate or preoccupy the thoughts, feelings or desires of (a person). –verb (used without object) 2. to think about something unceasingly or persistently; dwell obsessively upon something. My dog is my best friend. I’m with her as much as possible, and when I’m not, I think about her nonstop.

So as my poodle excitement bubbled, I thought about this shoot with Liz and her Moses quite a bit indeed. Then when I met the two of them in Orange on a beautiful cool Saturday morning, my anticipation was warmly satisfied with a perfectly pleasant session with this fabulous young woman and her darling dog.

No seriously, how cute is Moses?! I’m in love with him and I know Chloe would be too. Maybe Liz would be willing to meet up again for a puppy play date…hint, hint…

Alison Ritter - Love, love, love, love, love, love them! I may not own a poodle, but love my Boston just the same. As shown by her involvement on my wedding day. 🙂

A few weekends ago, I shot the baptism of Owen Michael at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine. My own church. The church where I’ve grown up since the age of 8. It was the first baptism I’ve shot in my own home.

And what a baptism to start with! Little Owen was a little angel, and my dear friends, Theresa and Tom, were graced with the honor of baptizing him. Tom just converted to Orthodoxy earlier this year, so it was especially inspiring for me to watch him step up to the plate, or font, to take on the role of godfather.

Owen Michael’s beautiful blue eyes were wide and full of wonder as he watched every moment of his service. It was like he knew God was present and wrapped around him during this pivotal point in his little life.

Jacob and Calee, thank you for the opportunity to document your beautiful son’s baptism. It was an honor and joy.
