Darcy and Brad got married on Descanso Beach in Catalina and the gods couldn’t have granted a more perfect day. The ocean breeze drifted in through the open windows as the girls and guys got ready, the sun warmed the grass aisle Darcy would walk down and the sky shown bright and blue in all its glory. Brad’s family has spent their summers on Catalina for as long as he can remember, so it was an easy choice to tie the knot on the island.

Everyone gathered as the ceremony start time drew near and Darcy and Brad said their vows in front of their family and friends and the brilliant sparkling ocean. As the evening began, they ate, drank and were merry as they celebrated on the Catalina shore with greens and blues to match the island’s vibrant colors. I loved it.

I shot this one for Full Spectrum Photography and was stoked for the opportunity to work with such great people, at such a beautiful event on such a spectacular day! #ilovemyjob !

Yesterday I did something I honestly never thought I’d do: I went to Liverpool.

Now for those of you that know me, you know I’m a Beatles fan. I don’t know every little story or fact or history nugget, I’m not quite that cray, but I am definitely one who has been changed for the better by the music of the Beatles. They’ve had a huge influence on my life and the way I view it and the way I hear and feel music.

So to go to the town where they grew up, the town where it all started, was moving beyond belief. For those of you who have been and have felt, you can empathize. SO MUCH of who we are comes from our childhood, so to stand on the stoops of their childhood homes, to walk down the alley ways where they played, to actually be behind the little shelter in the round about…it felt not only like I was connecting with Paul, John, George and Ringo’s childhood, but also my own. It was a magical walk down memory lane, or Penny Lane. Does that sound sappy? I don’t care. It is what it is. I am who I am.

Living with eyes closed is easy, People. It gets hard to be someone, but you know it all works out. There’s nothing really to get hungabout.

Ben’s bar mitzvah at Temple Beth Tikvah in Fullerton last week was awesome. The Dotan family is such a solid group and I was stoked to work with them again after Hannah’s bat mitzvah a few years back. As Ben walked in, I asked him ‘How ya feelin’?’ to which he replied, ‘Nervous.’ Naturally.

But he did so great! Ben lead that service with confidence and ease and everyone was proud. I always think myself so lucky to be able to share such important and intimate events with my clients and their families and friends. I’m not Jewish, but I’ve been able to experience and celebrate many bar and bat mitzvahs and it’s an awesome glimpse into a beautiful religion and culture. Here’s a visual glimpse for you…

Images from the rad reception to follow.

A bird just flew in my office and it startled me. It’s interesting how things can be uncomfortable when you’re not used to them, but there’s really no reason to be ill at ease. Let the bird fly where he wants. He’s not bothering you.

I’m headed out across the pond again, over to London, Liverpool and Leeds…To search for that self discovery I never can seem to let up, to rock and maybe roll a bit where the Beatles once did, to photograph Hannah and Dave as they commit their lives to one another in marriage. It’s sure to be a fantastic week.

I’ll be back June 5 and I promise to have many images and stories from the road to share.

As artists, we tend to find ourselves in slumps. I’m not quite certain how much of it has to do with our constant search for stimulation and growth and that silly sister Perfectionism that seems to go with it, or how much could be the darkness that we battle on the inside. Whatever the cause of the sinking, it’s hard to climb out when it happens.

For me it’s more often the former than the latter, and that constant search wears me out more than I’d like to admit. I’m always wanting more, seeking more, doing more, so much that I made a goal this year to ‘say no more.’ But I need more! Life is way too rich and beautiful to sit still and let it pass me by. I want to reach out and touch it, taste, and experience it all. I want to bring it all in, cry it all out and take this big bad world in my arms and hold it up. But instead it has a tendency to bring me down.

I think the artist in me feels that by expanding and doing more, I’ll be able to create more. I yearn to show people the world as beautiful as I see it, and I aim to do that through my art. That constant search keeps me moving closer to this goal…

And sometimes that means grabbing my camera and a friend and facing that darkness together on a midnight stroll. In a leotard. In a fountain. And when we find what we’re looking for, or when we don’t, we splash around and laugh. Always laugh. It’s the easiest way to lift from the slumps.
