For the love of dogs! Seriously, whyyyyy are dogs so amazing? I’m kind of obsessed with them.
I’m definitely obsessed with dogs that bring the energy level up, that make your feeling of safety secure and that are there to love you every minute of the day. Basically I’m explaining Morgan and Murphy, the beautiful German Shepherds that live just a few blocks away from me. I’ve had the pleasure and honor of dog sitting these two loves a few times now so I suppose I’m a little partial when I say, these dogs are fabbbbulous.
Morgan and Murphy are always ready to play, which I love. They’re always excited to see you and share with you and be around you. Energy level = up
Morgan and Murphy are big and can be loud and are smart and will stop at nothing to maintain loyalty by your side. Protection = secure
Morgan and Murphy are the sweetest Shepherds you could ever ask for and are there 100% of the time for Lauren and her husband Jerod. Dogs = 24/7 love
I was so happy to have some time to photograph Lauren and her two best friends out in Santiago Canyon a few weeks ago. It’s so important to document love and life and moments such as these and I’m so thankful to have similar images of my own best friend to cherish forever.

Sometimes as artists, we need to invest our time and energy into projects that promote creative expansion. Sometimes that involves doing things on our own or going out on a limb or taking exhausting climbs to heights we never thought possible before. Often as we service our clients and adhere to the guidelines of our contracted projects, we aren’t able to conceptualize further development. To say we get stuck can be an overstatement or understatement depending on the project/gig, but the point is that it’s important to keep the juices flowing. It’s important to nurture further development beyond our current work load.

Lately I’ve been spending a considerable amount of time working on personal projects. I only want to grow, I only want to expand and I only want to improve. I want to for myself, but also for you. And so taking my mind outside of the box and collaborating with other professionals and working to create new and exciting imagery can only transform me to bigger and better things, right? So stay tuned for some personal work here on the blog. Some fantastic images are coming your way soon.

For those of you with digital SLRs, this photography tip is for you. Have you ever taken an image and it showed up a little something like this…?

canon focus modesPINME

Oops! The camera focused on the wrong thing! What the…? Well have no fear! This photography tip on auto focus and focusing is just for you!

Most Canon digital SLRs have 9 focus points, as seen represented by the little boxes in the image below. These are the outlines of what you see when you look through the viewfinder:

Your camera focuses on whatever box is highlighted red, as seen below where the focus is in the center of the frame. Generally in AF, or Auto Focus, the camera has all focus points active and will choose the focus point for you.

Usually your camera is pretty smart in picking what to focus on, but if you’re anything like me, usually isn’t [ever] good enough. This is where changing the settings on your own comes in handy (raise the roof for manual shooters, oh ya). To select a single focus point, press the focus point selection button, as seen below on the left. You will then toggle through the focus points and select which box you’d like, using either the top dial as seen in the middle image, or with the dial shown on the right.

And wa la! An image focused how you want it to be! Don’t leave it up to you camera, folks. We’re smarter than our cameras, so we need to tell them what to do, okay?

A big thanks to the beautiful Carie Cruz from Peas and Peanuts Photography for the portraits to illustrate our point here. After taking the Camera Basics photography class, Carie had emailed me asking a focusing question so I took the opportunity to share the lesson with ya’ll. Hope you enjoyed/learned/loved! You can check out the rest of Carie’s shoot here.

There’s something amazing about earthquakes. And I’m not talking about the (cuh-razy) fact that Mother just decides to shift a bit and the whole earth rumbles and relocates to a different position. Because that is amazing in and of itself.

The amazing something to me about earthquakes is how you have to ride with them. When the ground starts to move and shake beneath your feet, there’s nothing you can really do but ride it out and hope for the best. Obviously when the really big one comes for us, it will shake my perspective to a completely different level. But of all the earthquakes I’ve experienced in my 20 some years living in Southern California, I know the importance of the ride.

And I can’t help but convert this into my life as a lesson. There is so much you cannot control. There is so much that keeps moving and shifting beneath your feet that you cannot stop. And you can choose to either freeze, scared and worried about what after shocks might shake you again, or you can ride with it, cautious through the change but confident, and ready to stand up on solid ground once more. It’s like falling off a horse or a bike and never wanting to get on again, but you’ve got to get back on. You’ve got to continue to ride. Because when you ride it out, stick with it with a calm assertive behavior, that’s when you grow.

And by ‘it’ I mean, anything that shakes you.

So shake on, World. I’m going to ride with you and grow bigger and stronger from it all.

Playing quietly, to herself,
In a graceful expression,
Always moving smoothly,
Never hesitating,
Peaceful, serene
Softly caressing the keys, as one would thin glass
Then, agitation.
The fingers move faster, curling with energy.
Agony touches it’s tone.
Crescendo, slur, sharp.
Then the song’s tempo slows.
She stretches, touching the last chord, fingertips quivering.
Relieved, then, satisfied is
The Pianist.

Natalie is a lovely little concert pianist whose portraits we created a few weeks back. She is a serious student of her craft and I look forward to watching her shine, stretch and satisfy the world with her music in the years to come. Portraits taken at a private residence in Anaheim.
