When I first met Brittany I was blown away, not by how hot she was, which I’m sure blows away many on first meetings. With Brittany I was blown away by her candor, her quick clever comments, her little bits of quirk and her complete and total confidence to say and act as she felt. It was so refreshing to meet a young woman so full of conviction for who she is. It made me want to be more of who I am.

Then to top it off, this chick is funny. Hilarious even. Like, ab-work-out-laughter. We giggled and snickered and laughed our way through happy hour that day as we made plans for her boudoir session for her 10 year anniversary with her husband…

So soon there after we met to create some gorgeous boudoir pictures that make me want to do more ab work outs. Britt, you’re gorge. #duh Thanks for rocking this fab sesh and letting me use your hot bod to show my work! #obsessed

Let’s talk about the ‘first look’ for a minute here. It’s become a popular thing in recent years and I want to educate all you brides and grooms and other fun folk on the why.

For those of you who are unfamil, the ‘first look’ is when the bride and groom get to see one another for the first time, before the ceremony. The photographers/videographers find a nice (hopefully quiet) space to give the happy couple alone time before the wedding festivities officially begin. I shoot from far off to give some privacy but am definitely there to photograph the entire greeting. There’s often tears, laughter, and always huge smiles and heavy hugs. It’s a beautiful set of moments to capture.

But here’s WHY it’s important and beneficial to incorporate this first look greeting/photo shoot into your wedding day:

1. Your wedding is about YOU two. Don’t you want to spend as much time as possible with your partner on the greatest day of your lives? The earlier you two get together (before the ceremony) the more you can enjoy it together.

2. As much as your wedding should be about YOU two, there are lots of other people attending your event. Often hundreds of guests arrive that need to be greeted and fed and entertained. It’s really nice to have a few intimate minutes alone together before co-hosting such a party.

3. Often weddings can be stressful. It’s incredibly soothing to take your partner’s hand and walk through it together. Seeing your spouse to be before all the guests arrive and the ceremony begins can alleviate a lot of anxiety.

4. When the bride and groom are able to see one another before the ceremony, it allows we photographer folk much more time and light to take care of portraits! We are able to make better use of the daylight and set up better angles than might be available in the church or ceremony spot. Then we don’t have to jam everything into the small hour between the ceremony and reception and you are able to enjoy a little bit of your cocktail hour if you wish or freshen up before the grand entrance.

5. As special as you think it’ll be to see one another for the first time as you walk down that aisle, it is still amazingly special. Grooms, your bride will still take your breath away and brides, your heart will still flutter. I promise.

So before you bank on being ‘traditional’ by not seeing your partner before the ceremony begins on your wedding day, please consider these points. Doing a first look allows more time together, more time for portraits and more time for fun!

can i say something that i haven’t really been able to say with complete confidence before?

i’m good at what i do.

everyone’s got their insecurities, and there shouldn’t be any doubt with those of you that know me that i’ve got mine. i struggle with my craft and my career and my creative vision and my personal progression all.the.time. and i too often find myself raising a brow at my work or my pursuits as if they aren’t good enough. it’s never good enough. i always want more. i always want to be more.

but when my client tells me she’s always loved how awesome i am, when she squeals and bursts with excitement as i show her an image on the back of my camera, when she tells me again and again how happy she is that i’m here shooting for her today, it begins to take a different shape in my mind.

i’ve come to a place in my work where i’m comfortable in any situation you might throw me. i’ve come to a point where i know how to get people to relax and feel at ease in front of the often uncomfy camera. i’ve developed enough to where i can create a good image just about anywhere. and i’m 100% confident in all that i’m able to do.

and even though i may still want more, want to be more, i know my clients know that i know what i’m doing. and i know i’m good at what i do. and that’s good enough for now.

thanks to my awesome assistant Aubrey for this fab shot. you’re the bestie, girl.

Carie - Oohhhh this post sure speaks to me!!! Dab, dab, I’m teary-eyed. Wow! I appreciate so much you exposing yourself like this, giving us insight into your thoughts about your work, your art, your career. You are a true inspiration to me. I’ve struggled with self-confidence in everything I’ve ventured into, so i’m relating, big time!! Thanks Jackie, again. Oh, and, of course you would look so great in boots & shorts, clicking away! Lookin’ fab!!

Quite often my clients order books after their portrait sessions. These custom designed albums are a beautiful way to preserve the memories of this time in your life, that moment you shared, or the milestone just passed. It’s a beautiful thing to pull off your shelf and flip through to relive time and time again.

Such was the case with Katie’s mother wanting a book for Katie’s high school graduation. Perfection! So we whipped up this design from her recent senior portrait session and wah laaaah! A beautiful book to let 18 year old Katie live on forever.

When I was a little girl my dad was my peaches and cream, the bee’s knees, my perfect pour, THEE MAN of my life. I looked up to him and loved him and adored him and I always wanted to be around him. He would get on his knees and dance with me. I wanted to be his secretary when I grew up. Basically, he was the coolest dude I knew.

Now that I’m older, he’s still the coolest dude I know. Now we both dance on our feet and though my secretarial career seems a little far fetched, I still want to be around him as much as possible.

You see, Leo Lovato is the most honest, hard working, disciplined, driven, focused, courageous, kind, generous, compassionate, loving, God-fearing, engaging, enthusiastic, gracious man I know, and I’m not just saying that because he’s my dad. Everyone that knows him agrees: Leo is peaches and cream, he’s the bee’s knees, a perfect pour, THEE MAN to know. He walks around shaking hands (he has an AWESOME hand shake), handing out hugs and kissing babies. He’s just that [great] guy. And everyone wants to be around him as much as possible.

Today, Father’s Day, I’m on the other side of the country, closer to where this family photo was taken, actually. So I’ll dip my toe in the water and send some love out into the Atlantic and reminisce on the last 31 Father’s Days my dad’s been able to celebrate, with and without me. Because even when it isn’t possible to be around him, it is possible to strive to be more like him. And I think making a venture to be more like Leo Lovato is a pretty damn good Father’s Day gift.
