‘How do you write the speech for your best friend’s wedding?’ the maid of honor pondered aloud during her toast last Friday. The sun had sunk outside as The Casino in San Clemente reception ballroom warmed in a candlelit bath of yellow and purple light, creating an exquisite scene for a celebration. The day’s preparations and getting ready were finally over, the tearful and heartfelt vows had been exchanged, and Katelyn and Darius were finally husband and wife.
The two met in college with a friendship that sprouted first then developed into what some might call a fling. After graduation they parted ways, and it wasn’t until the Tustin Chili Cook Off 2008 that they ran into one another again. Sparks flew. Emotions ran high. And the couple finally forged in all the romantic ambiance the little street fest had to share.
Since that fateful festival, their relationship has developed and new versions of friendship and love have sprouted around those roots first formed in college. They’ve learned how to live together and deal with life’s trash together and function fluidly as a pair through constant communication and companionship. As they shared personally written vows in the Casino yard, new seeds were planted in the garden of Katelyn and Darius that will no doubt bear fruitful and perennial pieces to their marriage.
So like Meghan, the MOH, I often wonder ‘how do you explain all the goodness of a good friend’s wedding?’ And sometimes I find that writing with light is easier than writing with words…
Katelyn’s MOH put a picture on Facebook that morning with the bride and her French press. Does that ruin the tradition if her groom sees?
While I was pondering that, I had to resist the yummy muffins the St. Regis had for the girls’ breakfast. I resisted eating them anyway…

I love how all the bridesmaids dresses were different (beautiful) hues of rich purple. Matching, but not identical.
The ringbearer held a pillow made from the denim of Katelyn’s dad’s jacket. May his memory be eternal.
