The last family portrait we had was taken in 2001. Ridiculous, right? I mean, I am a portrait photographer after all. You’d think I would have mandated this from my family years ago. But things so easily fall by the wayside.

Actually. The last four years, my parents have asked me to take our family portrait. With me in it. So that means, set up on a tripod, one, two, three, cheese! Not my kinda portraiture as you all [hopefully already] know.

So I called in the big guns: Robb Davidson Photography. Robb has become a good friend over the years and I knew he’d be the best dude for the task. It’s not always easy to coordinate family members to be there on time, wearing this or that, putting on a happy face and ready to rock a photo shoot. I mean obvs it’s taken us 10 years to get together to get it done.

But duh, Robb ROCKED it. Head over to his site for the full effect but here’s a few to feast your eyes on for now.

I love my family. And I love Robb Davidson Photography.

Abigail - I LOVE THE LOVATO FAMILY!!!

I made a goal this year to do one blog post every month (so, 12 are comin’!) to share some inspirational information. Not sure how it’ll be thrown atcha just yet, but to start, I want to share the name and work of one man: Chase Jarvis.

He’s a brilliant photographer and progressionist (that’s totally a word, even if I just made it up; it’s not just a word, but THEE word for 2012!) whose work and words are constantly keeping me on my creative toes and urging me towards growth. You may have heard me quote him before, as his line is one of my favorites that I carry with me daily: “The best camera is the one that’s with you.”

I was just forwarded a recent ‘Chase Jarvis Live’ episode (thanks @rinkumathew !) that really made me think and get excited to push towards some new growth this year. His ideas and progressional (another new word, mhm) pushes might not be for everyone, but he’s worth checking out. Take a peek at his work and get inspired today.

Katelyn and Darius are a fun couple. They like to laugh loud, they like to let go, they like to roll their eyes when the other is being silly. They’ve got a good routine together, working hard then hurrying home to be together and then making sure to take time off to play on the weekends.

Darius is a pilot, a point I had forgotten, so when I asked them if they like to travel, I was excited to hear yes! ‘especially weekend trips in CA!’ which they fly to privately, of course. Sometimes Darius flies Katelyn somewhere just for breakfast, just because he can.

So we decided to start at the Lyon Air Museum in Irvine to get some flight fun incorporated in their engagement session. Darius [and I] totally geeked out on all the WWII stuff and the three of us probably spent a little more time talking to a POW vet than we should have, seeing as we were racing to beat the sunset. It was a great place to start though and I love how Darius chatted with Katelyn about someday buying this plane or that, dreaming big for the future with his lady by his side.

We ended in San Juan Capistrano as the last slivers of sun light kissed Katelyn’s hair and Darius held her close. The pair met in college and spent one rememberable (totally a word) evening early on listening to DMB together in her dorm. So we wrapped the sesh with Darius doing a little DMB jam sesh for her as the fading light of day mixed with the first lights of night. A beautiful place to find yourself watching a young couple in love.

There’s something about Chicago that, I don’t know, touches me? Moves me? Makes me feel all giddy inside? Yes to all three.

That city just has this feeling of freedom and fast pace and peace and tranquility all rolled into one. Is that possible? It’s bustling yet bare, juxtaposed somewhere between those tall buildings and that large lake. It’s just such a cool city, filled with some of the coolest people I’ve ever met.

Last time I was there, I spent most of Friday by myself. I walked through the city most of the day, and learned many things on the way. Here’s a collection of images I shot on film that I think display the city’s unique contrast that I hold so dear.

How bout this weather, So Cal?! Are we like the luckiest people in the world that we get 75 degree winters or what?! I tell you what. I’ve been to several corners of the world and experienced several climates and I just don’t think you can beat the weather here. That’s why there are so many people here–it’s the best weather in the world!

I was thinking so back in November when I headed out to Balboa Island to shoot the Burnham family portraits for their holiday cards. Besides a tiny tantrum from the tiniest of us (no worries tho, I just shot the kid and wa la, my fave shot of the sesh), we smooth sailed it through the shoot with the temperate skies and lovely light. I just love where we live.
