They’re deep in the frame stage. That point in their lives as parents where it’s one thing after another to surround and support their kids. Practice after school. Homework after practice. Games and tournaments every weekend. Social sessions with friends between. Having the phone on your hip if anything comes up, ready to carpool and cater to whatever their children need.

It’s the point in the lives of parents where they seem to be more busy than ever, raising these kids, taking them too and fro, watching as they grow. But it’s this stage in the framing where the fruits of their labor start to blossom, and their adolescent children start to manifest themselves as responsible young adults.

I say frame stage, because, once you become a parent, you are no longer the picture, you become the frame. And it’s this point in a parent’s life where the frame gets stronger and more ornately designed than ever. Because the pictures they’ve produced become sharper and more lovely than ever.

The Granados make a lovely set of pictures in frames. I met them for a family portrait session at Rancho Capistrano and it wasn’t the location or the light that made this family shine…

I had the distinct honor and pleasure of getting to know and photograph Groundation last night at their show at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana. It was a BLAST. All these guys are totally down to earth and amazing musicians and were super cool with me ‘getting up in their grill’ during their show. I appreciate the all access, but more so, appreciated the openness of these dudes (y chicas!) to me and my camera.

Just a quick unedited sneak peek for now…and a reminder that, they ask me why I play music… MUSIC IS THE MOST HIGH.

As some of you may know, the circus was just in town. I had the distinct honor (and pleasure) of entertaining two clowns while they were in town. Yes, I said it. Two clowns were at my house for two weeks and I entertained them.

How might one entertain clowns, one might ask? Well, I’m still trying to figure that out. But I think it’s safe to say they had themselves a good time here in Orange.

But what’s even more apt to say is that I had myself a good time getting to know these two dudes and the lives they lead. I mean, c’mon, they live on a train that’s a mile long. They wear more make-up than me. They perform in over 700 shows in less than 300 days and do flips and tricks and all sorts of crazy gimmicks all day long…in and out of the circus rings. They’re non-stop fun and the best part is…they’re really good guys underneath it all. They’re gone now, and I’m feelin’ the miss factor. Major.

So I thought I’d share some really rad lyrics from a really rad band that remind me of these really rad dudes…(along with some really rad portraits by a really rad photographer, cause every story goes better with visual aids, duh)…

when I jumped off, I had a bucket full of thoughts

when I first jumped off, I held that bucket in my hand

ideas that would take me all around the world

I stood and watched the smoke behind the mountain curl

it took me a long time to get back on the train

now I’m gone and I’ll never look back again

I turn my face into the howlin’ wind

it took me a long time to get back on the train

I left it all behind, again I’ll travel far

it took me a long time to get back on the train

When I consult with newly engaged couples, the biggest task I have in the time that I have their attention is to educate them. So many people have never planned a wedding before and therefore know little to nothing about how wedding photography works. So I spend a lot of time explaining how things work, how I work, and what they are to expect from me or any wedding photographer they should consider booking for their big day.

I figured it’d be a good idea to put a few snippets of that education out there online, so you can all be armed with some of the awesomeness that we wedding photographers should be doing.

SO, without further ado, Lovato Images’ Tips for Hiring Your Wedding Photographer:

•  First and foremost, make sure you like their photography. Visiting their website would help.

•  Make sure your photographer is good with lighting. Obviously, that’s what photography is all about. So your wedding photographer really should know how to work with light, especially when it’s right in their eyes.

•  Your photographer should be FUN! Your wedding photographer is with you all day long, so they should have a good attitude and a personality that fits with yours. When you have fun with your photographer, you are having more fun and are more relaxed and better images result.

•  Be sure to inquire about the photographer’s physical skill. Shooting a wedding for 10+ hours is a very physical task and you don’t want a photographer that can’t endure the day. Asking them how many squats they do per day is a good question to consider.

•  Make sure your photographer isn’t afraid to get down and dirty. You want a creative photographer that’s going to get different shots and angles so your images are as unique as you are! So a photographer that lays on the ground is definitely a smart and artsy shooter.

•  Along with a creative side, you want to make sure your photographer has a photojournalistic approach as well and is able to get candid shots without being in the way. This is where the free and open action happens and you want a photographer who can document the real stuff without being all up in your grill (potentially spoiling the moment). A stealth, ninja-like photographer is a fabulous choice to get the most honest images from your day.

•  You want a photographer that loves what they do. When there’s a few minutes of down time, your photographer ideally should be smiling, laughing, enjoying your wedding day, and shooting extra stuff just for fun. Because duh, they love what they do. So a photographer that takes weird self portraits during a few extra minutes before the ceremony would obviously be a good photographer for anyone. Because duh, they just love what they do.

Kelly - You are right, this post rocks it!

As mentioned in my previous post, words can’t describe all the love and awesomeness that went into Dave and Nicole’s wedding weekend in Tahoe last month. Dave and Nicole are just a really special couple and the family and friends that surround them and support their love are a group that I hope to know and be a part of forever. Their wedding experience was one I’ll never forget feeling, and my cup overfloweth with Goodness from all that it was.

For now, I’ll let the lyrics from their first dance do the talking, along with some images…

Give me little drink from your loving cup
Just one drink and I’ll fall down drunk

I feel so humble with you tonight,
just sitting in front of the fire
See your face shining in the flame,
feel your mouth kissing me again

What a beautiful buzz,
what a beautiful love!
