You guys. I want to tell you a little story about a ‘walk’ my partner and I took the day after my brother’s destination wedding in Tuscany. I’m sure you all want to hear about the wedding and that will come, no doubt. Be patient. For now, a small story to whet my whistle (yea, mine) in recounting a lovely little taste of Toskana we shared.

///////////////////////////////////

We wanted to go for a walk, but my allergies were insane. I had also gotten bit 35x by some asshole bug the night before, so to say I was itchy, sniffly and uncomfortable would be an understatement. I was miserable. So instead of a walk, we hopped in the car for a drive. We had no intention of stopping.

As the discomfort cleared, we came upon the tiny town of Chiusure atop a giant hill. It was literally one street long (and it wasn’t long) with another street that wrapped around it to get you back to the other side. We parked. And relishingly made our way through. It was quiet. Slow. Just the way a small village in Tuscany should be.

By the time we made our way back around to our car, we glanced at one another and without word agreed we weren’t quite done here. So we sauntered into an abandoned ristorante for a glass of wine. Tables had been enjoyed, used, but no one else remained. My partner accidentally ordered a liter (as our server did not speak a drop of English), so we decided to order some bruschetta and eventually some caprese to help it go down. Not that it needed help. It was the house wine, bianca casa, and some of the best we had the whole trip.

Eventually we decided to taste the olive oil on its own and foodgasms followed. A farmer just in from tending his field dropped off handfuls of fresh picked cherries without saying a word. More foodgasms.

We drove back slowly, as our Tuscan friends would have us, and enjoyed the moisture in the air, the rolling fields, olive orchards, vineyards and mostly the beauty of doing nothing. The only sniffles at this point were the ones to come when it was time to leave.

Eyelash lace. Peonies. Sunshine. A tiny old chapel. Good people. A white bow tie. The best ingredients to start a wedding day off on the right foot.

Add in a few farmhouse tables topped with an exquisite dinner party and warm light that slowly faded behind the homes of the neighborhood Meg grew up in. Add Brian’s best friends and family. Insert a gleaming pool. The Fenians. An Irish dance party and Irish blessings. The magic of the day sweeps through my veins as I recount all the loveliness that was the celebration of Meghan and Brian’s union.

When I first met Brian I knew he was the one. Glad Meg got on board. 😉 I couldn’t be happier for my friends as as they take their first steps together as husband and wife.

I really love photographing weddings. Often I’ll ‘second shoot,’ as we call it, where I get hired by another photographer to be the second photographer on the day. When you ‘second’ you have less responsibility; you show up the day of, shoot, hand over images and go home. Closest thing to clocking in and out I’ve ever known. You also get to be a little more free spirited and creative with your shots because you’re not responsible for the entire shot list. It’s nice!

But when you second, you lack that relationship, that connection with the couple. I literally repeat their names over and over in my head as I drive there to remember, as I’ve typically never met them before. Sometimes that bothers me, because so much about what I do and why I’m passionate about it is in knowing who these people are so I can capture their special moments with understanding and honor.

So when I show up to [second] shoot for a couple like Tracie and Joe, it really makes me happy. Because Tracie and Joe are the type of people that just spew out warmth and integrity. Their family and friends were so loving and kind, it felt like I was part of their crew as we witnessed the two became one in marriage. What a special, special day.

This one I shot for Mission Visual. Yessir, I sometimes shoot video too. Awesome film making, as usual, Mike.

Welcome to the world, Dean! I’m so glad I was able to come over the day before I left town to photograph you at a fresh 3 days old! What a handsome young fellow you already are!

You were such a trooper for our shoot, even though you didn’t like when I opened the window to get more light on you. I know, it’s bright. But it looked so good on your sweet baby face. Thanks for being such a good boy for your first photo shoot! <3

A former client, friend and guest at Meghan and Brian’s wedding on Saturday said to me ‘I guess it never gets old when you love what you do, huh,’ in response to my statement on how ‘work’ was going. Darn straight, I said. It really doesn’t.

And ‘loving what I do’ would be putting it lightly when talking about Meghan and Brian’s wedding on Saturday. They got married in the Chapel of Orange and celebrated with their dearest in Meghan’s parents’ backyard…a place where so many memories have been made over so many years. The admirable couple got married themselves in the same Chapel 40 years ago, less a day, and Meghan and Brian honored that not only in their thank you toast, but in the way they live their lives. Brian’s parents are honored too by the way he and Meghan share their love, their compassion and generosity with integrity and zeal. Attributes worth raising a glass for, again and again and again.

Cheers to you, Meghan and Brian! Thank you for keeping my love for my work alive with the brilliant example you set every darn day. And for adding some ‘peer pressure‘ once in awhile to jump in with you. 😛

More photos to come!
