I love shooting families. I love getting to hang out with them for awhile, observe their family dynamic and try and capture them exactly as they are. It’s not always easy and I wouldn’t say I always nail it perfectly. But most often, I’m able to capture a few moments that leave me sweetly satisfied.

I shot the Sharkeys a few weekends ago and must say I’m excited when the sixth Sharkey arrives next year so I can meet him and shoot him too! More sweet satisfaction to come…!

With kids…creating a diversion is always helpful…in this case…a playground!

Robb Davidson - Oh my gosh this family is ADORABLE! It helps to have people really love the camera…and then your ability to really have their personalities shine through that glass!!!

The holidays always manifest more quickly than I ever anticipate…because always, all of a sudden, they’re upon us.

But Thanksgiving is always the day where I’m able to slow down and focus on how quickly time comes and goes, how fickle money dwindles and flows and how beautifully abundant my life really is. I come to my parents, they hand me a drink, I lay on their couch, I eat their amazing food, am wrapped with their amazing energy and love warms my insides more vibrantly and richly than the whiskey ever could.

I am thankful for so much. Every moment, every embrace, every conflict, every race…every note, every move…every second of this beautiful life I’ve lived…has built a richness inside of me that has made me more well-off and loaded than a millionaire could ever hope to be.

The holidays to me are about counting blessings. The holidays to me are about slowing down amidst the rush. The holidays to me are about reminiscing on all the good times. They are also about remembering the bad times.

I hope you are able to slow down today. Count your blessings, not your bank account. Reminisce. Get warm inside. Remember. And know that no matter how good or bad it might be…it gets better. If you are open to it, it always gets better.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hey folks…as you can tell (if you’ve been before), we’re working on some changes to the blog. Hope you like!

Please bear with us as we morph Lovato Images into a better me.

For now…here’s a fab shot of me tearing it up on the dance floor at a wedding I shot this summer.

For future reference, yea…if there’s a circle where people are jumping in to bust a move, expect me to get in there. It’s like a guaranteed good time.

Davy - This is one of the coolest pics ever!!!!

I met Kalei, gosh, back in 2002, I think. Long before I had any idea that this photography thing would become what it has to me…

A short time later, she was engaged to marry her love, Cary. Not yet having much wedding experience under my belt, I was thrilled at the opportunity to shoot their wedding. That was back before I had a site or a blog. Maybe I’ll post some images from their wedding sometime. It was one of my first.

Then they got pregnant. And they called me to photograph the first portrait session of their first daughter, Emalani. Then they called me again when she was six months old. And again when she turned one. And again. And again.

And I love it! First of all, this entire family is FAB so it’s always a pleasure to spend time with them. But beyond that, it’s been amazing to watch their family grow. Emalani has the most spirited personality. She is a complete joy to observe and photograph. Capturing her little essence is like watching a heartwarming story unfold. Every little smile, smirk and gleam in her eye pulls on the heart strings and leaves you thankful for the images to remember her by until you see her again…

Two weeks ago I met up with some members of FOCUS Orange County to document an event they held in Anaheim. I didn’t know much about any of it as I drove up, but quickly learned what a wonderful focus it had.

The FOCUS mission is: as an expression of Christ’s love, FOCUS North America serves the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick and imprisoned by providing Food, Occupation, Clothing, Understanding, and Shelter. And at this event, that’s exactly what they did.

There were free vaccines, health exams, food, clothes, toys, games, transitional living opportunities and lots people with open arms. Everyone had a lot of fun and a lot of people got treatment and care they otherwise might never had.

So it was a complete joy to document. After going on a medical mission to Africa earlier this year, I realized, you don’t have to have a special skill to help out. Just reach out. It’s amazing what just lending a simple hand can really do.
