There is something about this work, this photography work of mine, that is deep and strong and forever. Yet somehow, this incredible something isn’t appreciated often enough.

It rests silently in the little black box that I hold in my hands nearly every day and manifests itself with every click of the shutter. It is the power that cameras and the people that use them have to transcend time and embrace eternity, one image at a time.

Images. Photographs. Pictures. As we create them, we freeze a moment in time and that moment becomes timeless. The intangible eternity, in our very own hands.

Keep them. Protect them. Share them. And they will last forever.

This clarity offers just a sliver of light in a moment of darkness…

The mother of the groom I photographed this past Saturday passed away last night after suffering a massive heart attack. I did not know her before the wedding. But I am honored to present her family with the last images of her ever taken. With these images, and with many others taken throughout her life, her memory will be eternal, in my heart and many others.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Nash. May your memory be eternal.

I am such a goal-oriented-to-do-list-maker-get-things-done-or-my-day’s-not-a-good-one type of girl. This is great in so many ways. However, this can also be conflicting.

I like to think I’m balanced. I like to think I get in enough play time to balance all the work time. But then if I play too much, or too many days in a row, I kick myself. I get down. I feel worthless. I feel like I’ve lost so much time that should have been spent working, developing, growing myself and my business and all the things that will propel me forward.

But then I think about all that I’ve done. All that I’ve experienced. And I’m humbled.

Yes, sitting in this yellow-walled-office has provided me ample opportunity to expand creatively, professionally, intellectually…but when I think about moving forward…I don’t think about all my time sitting here at this desk.

I think about riding on the back of a scooter through the streets of Phuket. I think about laying on a catwalk in a cabin in MN with my best friend. I think about the little lady who said I made her feel beautiful after taking her portrait. I think about the fun I share and the beauty that I see every day. And I begin to understand…that…it’s not how many things get checked off my list today. It’s about taking time to appreciate each and every moment, as fleeting as they might be.

Because those moments, that appreciation, that reflection…that’s where we move forward. That’s how we grow.

Jackie - Thank YOU, Liz. I always feel better after our pep talk calls…I appreciate you.

I’ll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful woman instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called NAPA…

I was there last week to attend and photograph the wedding of a beautiful young lady with her family who are good friends of the Lovatos and have been for 30 years.  It was a beautiful celebration, a beautiful union to celebrate and at a beautiful location to be celebrating!

I traveled up with my parents, who, if you have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, I hope one day you are able. They are an amazing set of folks, and two of my very best friends. We got in Wednesday afternoon and pranced around the lovely valley enjoying some vineyards, some laughs and some really good conversation with one another and those we met along the way.

Here’s a little peak into our day…

Kan - Awesome pics, Jackie. Tell your mom I said hello. 🙂

Last month Goodfellas Tattoo in Orange hired me to do some stock shots of their artists’ work for the shop’s portfolio. Not exactly the type of work I’d call my forte, but I went in excited and ready to rock it anyway.

And it was fun! They had an ‘open house’ where they invited all of their clients to come hang out while I had a small studio set up in the corner. I was supposed to focus on tight shots of the specific pieces that were done at Goodfellas, but I couldn’t resist getting in a few portraits that I wanted.

Goodfellas is going to have an art show in their shop on October 23 next month. I’m going to hang a piece or two…you should come!

Sometimes you just KNOW. And it was one of those times for Michelle…

She first saw Chris at the retirement home she was working at in Illinois, and he was there visiting his grandmother. The two made eye contact, which lead to some really good conversation, which lead to a whirlwind courtship and engagement which will end and begin again on their wedding day next April. From that first day, they both just KNEW.

In town for Labor Day weekend, the two met with me for a quick engagement session in Orange. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and knowledge was wafting in the breeze…

You can’t explain it, but sometimes, you just KNOW.
