Sometimes I find myself stuck on words. I’m a writer through and through but as all writers know, sometimes you get stuck. And I am SO stuck in the middle of these images* with Dawn and Hawkes**.

Part of me wants to rave and rave about how genuine and generous these two are. Then part of me thinks you already feel that. Another part wants to whisper hints of the amazingness that they create together, but part of me knows you already see that.

I guess I’ll let the images do the writing. For whatever story these images write in your own mind is far more powerful than any words I could put to it…

Carie hit me up awhile ago to do some fresh headshots for her newly updated website (check out her photography work, yo! headshot by yours truly). So we did. Then a few weeks later I invited her to check out my new studio and while she was here, we did a few more…with film.

For those of you who have been following my blog (thank you, I love you), you know that I’ve been dabbling a bit in the world of film photography. I’ve always shot film for fun, when I travel, when I want to see and think about things a little differently, but lately I’ve taken it to a different level. Initially without any intention of shooting film professionally, I’ve found myself loving the medium more and more and wondering if I should incorporate some film into my business…

There’s just a depth to film that digital can’t match. It’s rich with texture and layers of meaning hidden into every piece of emulsion…maybe I’m romanticizing it a bit. But I love it. We shot all these of Carie on film. What do you think?  Do you love it too? Should Lovato Images offer a package or option on film?

No post production or Photoshop was used on any of these images…straight from camera.

carie - I say yes to film all the way! These are fun & was fun! Thanks gal!!

Sometimes there are moments when a person walks into your life and you know that you cannot let them leave. You just feel it and there’s this instant understanding that this person was placed on your path on purpose. Don’t let them go, is whispered at the nape of your neck, so you get their phone number and you don’t.

Such was the case with Sam. I knew immediately I needed more of this lady in my life. And now a few years later, it’s obvious I was right.

Sam is a mother. Sam is a lover. A provider. A protector. A student of life and love and a teacher of the same. She’s courageous and fierce and wild like a lion’s mane, yet she’s soft and sensitive and allows herself to be vulnerable too.

I wanted to celebrate her softer side a bit so when she got in front of my camera, I worked to pull that out. Because every woman, no matter how strong, needs to soften and listen for those moments that murmur Don’t let this go

Carie - Jackie I could never tire of viewing your work of a woman’s beauty. These images are so beautiful. love the black backdrop!

1. Start with a photographer you trust. Hiring the right photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding. He/she has the task of documenting not only a very special day, but more importantly, your love and the beginning of your family’s story. Make sure you love their work and trust their skill and you’ll be more relaxed (and better photographs will result).

2. Choose a location that’s meaningful to you. When you are photographed at a location that is significant to you, it tells a more complete story of your love and who you are as a couple. Think about the place you first met, your first date, a spot you spend a lot of time, your new house…your engagement photos are about capturing who you are at an incredibly special time in your lives and the location can help express that.

3. Make sure your style and clothing represent who you are. Plan on wearing two outfits each for two looks and have fun with it. Get dolled up like you would for a fabulous date or rock the sun dress and Sperry’s if you’re headed to the docks. Just make sure your style is YOU. Remember what Coco says: Fashion changes, but style endures.

4. Wear clothing you both feel fabulous in and coordinate outfits, but don’t match. You should both be casual if you want to have fun with roller skates on the boardwalk, or you should both be dressed elegant if you want a timeless classic look on a city sidewalk. Whatever you decide to wear, make sure you are comfortable and feel great.

5. Consider bringing a significant prop. If you bring an item that is fun or important to your relationship it generates creativity and provides some personal insight into your story. It could be a guitar, cowboy hats, your motorcycle or your dog…as long as it’s you, it’ll help communicate more about your relationship.

6. Have fun! This is about documenting your love and telling your story so enjoy every moment of it! The more fun you have the more relaxed you’ll be and the more honest imagery you’ll create.

Some quick extra tips:
1. Avoid tiny or busy prints in your clothing
2. Get your hair and make up professionally done
3. Use eye drops an hour before the shoot to make your eyes pop
3. Get plenty of sleep the night before the shoot and be on time
4. Drink lots of water the week of the shoot to hydrate your skin
5. Avoid drinking alcohol the night before the shoot
6. And again, have fun!

If I only had one word to describe Nicole and Brian, it would be without question: joyful. The joy and light just shines right out of them, every second of the day.

Now, I was lucky to get to spend a very special day with them but the awesomeness of these two is definitely a daily deal. Their wedding was at Casa Bonita in Fullerton and the place dazzled in their energy. During the intimate courtyard ceremony, Nicole and Brian couldn’t get the smiles off their faces. They promised to let love abide and stay forever true to each other and to Lily, Nicole and now Brian’s daughter. They presented Lily with an infinity necklace during the ceremony and it’s obvious their joy will continue that long.

Then came the dancing. Now I don’t know, but I’ve been told, if you keep on dancing you’ll never grow old… and this group understands that completely. How can you not live with joy like that?

Nicole runs a hair salon in Huntington with her best friends, so they all did their thanggg, making the getting ready portion of the day extra awesome.

Beth Costa of The Pink Daffodil did the flowers and oh my! aren’t they gorge?!
