It was 9pm and I was driving away from Wattle Creek. I had just wrapped a fantastic family portrait session in Oakland, tasted some wine with a friend, and was on my way to retire for the evening before a 4:30am wake up to head to Stockton. My body was tired, my heart was warm, and I was ready to rock the next day of work on the road.

Then my car started to make an insane sound I had never heard an engine make before. I immediately pulled over and began the 4 hour journey of dealing with a dying vehicle. I was 400 miles from home, 70 miles from my sunrise gig, car-less and feeling like a beat up boat with zero wind for my sails.

Fortunately like I somehow always do, I figured it out and was able to rock the rest of my work scheduled that weekend and have some fun along with it. I’m not going to get into all the crazy details, but if you follow me on Twitter, you know it was an insane 36 hours.

It’s trying times like those that always force me to stop and appreciate all my blessings. I’m one of those people that bites off more than she can chew, and I usually figure out how to chew it along the way. But it can be stressful! and not making sure my vehicle was in top condition before I took off on a 900 mile, 7 city, 5 gig tour certainly created stress. It made me place a much higher value on my car and my friends and my freedom and stop to give thanks for it all…

Especially thankful for the experience of climbing through a barbed wire fence and running with 30 pounds of gear to the top of a hill to catch the sun rising over my clients’ property…definitely a bonus moment I’ll never forget.

Someone recently asked me to tell a bridezilla story that I’ve experienced. Without hesitation I responded that I’d never worked with one. All my clients have been insanely awesome, from the first phone call to the wedding day to the five-year anniversary where we celebrate with family portraits (stay tuned for that story, we’re shooting this week!). The people I work with just get it.

Emily and Colby and their families fit right into this awesomeness I’ve collected in clientele. Emily called me last fall on a Taco Tuesday, and I excused myself from my friends to chat with her outside for a bit. I knew right away I was going to like this chick, and as the year went on and her wedding day came, that ‘like’ had effortlessly morphed into love.

You see, Emily and Colby are all about love and family, which are the two most important elements to a badass wedding in my opinion. Their wedding day was wrapped up in togetherness, commitment and celebrating with the people they love most. The night before at the rehearsal dinner, Emily said ‘this wedding isn’t about me and it isn’t about Colby, it’s about all of you. You all have been so supportive and tomorrow is about this relationship and all of you welcoming us into the community.’ Insanely awesome, right?

I just love it when a couple gets it. And Emily and Colby certainly do. Their love is tremendous and the best part is that it’s grounded in the love they were both raised with. They celebrated last month on a sunny Saturday at Marbella Country Club in San Juan and awesomeness was abundant. Not a zilla in sight.

Such a tender moment with Emily and her dad, FOB as I liked to call him, right before the ceremony…

I’ve decided it’s time to start compiling images for a highlight reel of Hairstyles of the Poodle. I mean, this girl has seriously had so many different do’s, she deserves her own book. Right? I’m thinking 12×12 coffee table style; we’ll sell millions. Or maybe I’ll just make one for myself.

What prompted me to this venture is the summer do she’s rockin’ right now. We’re growing out the facial hair for more of a summer scruff, an air dried tousled tress look with beachy waves. We’ve never really done this and we’re loving it. I mean summer’s so busy (for us) and there’s no time for blow drying, straightening, producting and all that jazz. We need something easy. And in summer time, the livin’s gotta be easy.

What are you loving that’s easy this summer?

With summer comes hot sunshine, toes touching cool water, backyard bbq’s, bikinis, ice cold beverages and sun kissed tresses, usually tousled. My friend and fabulous stylist Matt wanted to create an image for his clients that told just that…Or maybe he just wanted to create a rad image and we somehow wrapped all that good summerness into it without thinking.

Either way, a few weeks back, Matt and I teamed up to do something fun and freeing and hopefully help people get to seeing how rad working with us can be!

If you’re a girl, chances are high that you’ve dreamt of your fairy tale wedding at some point or another. For some of us that’s just the two of us barefoot on the sand in Hawaii, for others it’s just your closest family and friends at the courthouse followed by an intimate dinner for 15. Then others still, it’s the beautiful ball gown, the tiara, the church with the steeple and all of the people celebrating at a gorgeous reception with candles and toasts and dances.

Hannah and Dave got their fairy tale, complete with the steeple and the people and the gown and tiara and the dancing until tomorrow. It was magical, but not because of that or all of the lovely DIY details or English country side charm. Hannah and Dave’s UK wedding was magical because of Hannah and Dave.

Their love is fantastic! I’ve never seen a couple more suited for one another. Dave’s calm and caring demeanor stands tall beside his adoration for Hannah’s sweetness and spunk. they match perfectly. The centuries old church where Dave’s parents wed some 30 years ago was amazing. Hannah’s princess gown was stunning. The garden wedding reception in the Priory Cottages was spectacular. But Hannah and Dave’s love was the strongest and the emotion that oozed out of them that Saturday in June was all we needed for the most dreamy English wedding ever; the beginning of a fairy tale for sure.
