The Palos scheduled their family photography session earlier this fall in order to get their family photos back in time to design their holiday cards. Updated portraits are so important to document these times in a young family’s life.

As wedding photographers themselves, the Palos understand the necessity of preserving moments. Especially with young children. These fleeting days where throwing sticks and ninja kicks are every day occurrences, and laughter is perched around every corner.

So their beautiful greeting card arrived yesterday and brought us up to speed on their boys and their business and all the awesomeness 2012 brought with it. I love a holiday card with an annual report, and lots of pics too. Glad I could help the Palos out with that this year.

Happy holiday weekend, ya’ll!

I’ve never been one of those scrap booking, craft making, create something of nothing typa chicks. I just can’t seem to create by painting wood or pinning pictures or gluing fabric onto mason jars.

My craftiness tends to come out more in problems that need to be solved or obstacles that need to be overcome. That’s actually one of the things I love most about photography: there is almost always a problem that needs to be solved. So often the lighting is strange, the backgrounds are busy or the strobe goes out and it needs to be repositioned, the transmission needs to be reworked, batteries need to be changed or it must be bypassed altogether. There are constantly changing factors that factor into image creation and so often we photographers are forced to find a quick fix. I love the adventure of it all.

On a family adventure earlier this year in Greece and Italy, a quick fix was quickly in order. We were on our way to St. Peter’s Basilica, and silly me forgot about the covered shoulder rule inside the church. I had worn this outfit on our day’s excursion:

“Let’s go buy you a scarf,” my mom said. Thinking of the beautiful scarf I had bought in Rome last year, my frugal sense got the best of me and immediately my crafty skills set in. “No, I have an idea,” I replied as we rounded the corner out of the guards’ site. I pulled up my skirt, took of my shirt and tied myself into a more modest and conservative situation. We turned right back around and cruised past the guards without a second glance. Success!

So you see, craftiness comes in all shapes and sizes, as does adventure. And though I may not be able to do much with a paintbrush or a hot glue gun, I got most problem-solving craftiness covered. Get out of my way obstacles: I WILL OVERCOME YOU. And stylishly so, if I do say so myself.

😛

PS–I promise more images from our September adventures will be coming soon. You Lovato lovers have been asking. I will deliver.

Andrea was one of my first friends in the second grade. I remember some of our first interactions in the shade below Mrs. Clements’ classroom, where we soon discovered our shared interests in playing dress up, singing and still creating Barbie kingdoms on our bedroom floors (playing with dolls had somehow become ‘uncool’ in our matured age, but we both still loved it #foreveryoungatheart).

Our families ended up buying homes on the same street, joining the same church and spending holidays together and every bridge crossing in all the kinds of weather. Basically, we grew up together. And now Andrea and her husband Derrick are growing their own family.

Introducing Nicholas. He a ball of inquisition, charm, raised eyebrows, Agape, and the biggest grin you’ve ever seen. At sixteen months, he’s already shaping up to be one fine fellow and I know a huge part of that can be attributed to all the time Andrea and I spent ‘playing house’ as kids, preparing ourselves for motherhood one nurturing Barbie hug at a time. Kidding. Kind of.

So while I’ve still got plenty of time to hone my parenting skills, Andrea and Derrick are off and at ’em with Niko. This darling dude is such a joy and I’m excited to continue our growing up together with his smile in the mix.

Woo! It has been nonstop lately and I can’t help but stop and count my blessings. And the Aroras are definitely one of them! I have known this family for many years and they are seriously as sweet as they come. It is always and honor and pleasure to spend time with them. 🙂

So naturally, I was thrilled when I found out they were all going to be in town and attending a wedding of a mutual friend at the Fairmont Santa Monica. I mean, not only did I get to spend the evening with this fab family, I got to do family photography while they were all dressed up too! Awesomeness.

Just look at those sparkly dresses and beautiful gowns! And the gentlemen looked dapper in their suits as well. We scooted off for 20 minutes between the ceremony and reception to shoot them all shined up while someone rolled out the red carpet because this family looked that good.

Which just gave me an idea: if your family is going to be all gussied up this holiday season or perhaps later on at a special event, call me. I’d be happy to come and do a mini-session for you while you’re all sparkly and fabulous. Then you can look back and remember to count your blessings with a beautiful professional portrait of your beautiful family too.
