Not in the words whispered, nor the passages read. Not from the love felt, nor the joy shared. Not in any of the typical things that make a wedding grand made this one so, no. It was the way he looked at her that made this wedding unique. It was the honesty and decency and complete adoration that were deep in Ryan’s eyes when he looked at his bride on Saturday that made this photographer’s eyes well with tears. Just the way he looked at her transformed this wedding into something spectacularly special.

And boy, she sure was a sight to see. Chills swept all arms in the room once her dress was zipped and looking at her gorgeous self in the mirror. Not because she’s beautiful, because she is; but because she was the most beautiful she’d ever been, beaming with a brightness only a bride marrying the man of her dreams could convey.

And when she walked down that aisle, everyone caught their breath on the light breeze, because we all knew this union was right. And the way he looked at her sealed it, even before the vows or rings were exchanged.

Ana and Ryan, your wedding was magical and moving and momentous beyond belief. I was so thrilled and honored to be there. After a 12 hour day, getting into my car that night with a two hour drive ahead of me, a sore throat, lost voice and a deep desire for my bed, I could only think to myself, God, I love what I do. Thank you.

‘It’s hard bein’ on the road, Babygirl,’ the tall, dark man said with a raised eyebrow as he passed me on his way out of the tour bus. I was hanging out ‘back stage’ at a local show last year and was shooting the sh*t with one of the bands. The guys were laughing and teasing one another, but the big guy getting off the phone with his lady wanted to make sure I knew: life on the road ain’t easy.

But after spending some time on Groundation‘s road last month, I knew that while it may not be easy, it can be unbelievably good. Sure there’s family and loved ones left at home to miss. There are long hours and late nights and uncomfy beds. There are close quarters and contagious coughs and irritated nerves. But Groundation somehow gets it. They’re a family united by roots that go deeper than some life -on-the-road blues.

I think the thing about Groundation (besides their fantastically groovy music) is that they’ve got soul. And when you’ve got that, it doesn’t matter where your journey may take you, the road’s always a good place to keep on groovin’ it.

Robb Davidson - Oh my GOSH these are INCREDIBLE!!! I love how you handled the available light so well!!!! Perfect. Captured them so well.

Photographing women is one of my favorite things to do. Women are simply a stunning subject. Why? Well for some reason, women open up to me differently. Women look through my lens a little more sensitively, a little more freely and quite often, women are able to reveal themselves to me and my camera a little more wholly.

Then when you remove layers of clothing, it’s like the rest of the walls suddenly crumble down. It’s like stripping inhibitions off one by one, peeling back layers of who they show the world they are, and opening up to who they are really underneath it all. They stare me right in the eye, look through my lens, and truth flows out. It’s a stunning thing to see.

Some women do it for their husbands. Some do it for their boyfriends. Some women take boudoir portraits simply because she wants to. She wants to have fun. She wants to feel sexy. She wants to explore her sensuality. She wants to have confidence. She wants to be happy with what she’s got!

And if that’s not wholly stunning, I don’t know what is.

rinku mathew - Yes, that is stunning, and very appealing. Relatedly, what you learned from shooting men?

  • March 30, 2012 - 1:43 pm

rinku mathew - *hmm. Not sure what happened but “have” is missing in my question.

South by Southwest is a music festival that literally takes over Austin. Already there’s live music everywhere in that town, but during SXSW, there’s literally music on every corner. People set up stages in parking lots, back alleys, or just pull out their guitars on the streets. Music dances in your ears every step you take.

So I set out to walk around! I started out by filling my belly with some bbq (naturally) and mosied about, running into old friends, supporting musician friends and making new friends along the way. Here’s a quick photographic tour through my 24 hours in Austin…and I should mention these are all just quick snaps between all the fun I was having…I didn’t intend on documenting my day there with the camera but it kind of ended up happening. Wish I had more to share. Always.
