Last year I decided to change a few of my systems and forms of networking so that I looked less into ‘networking events’ and focused more on relationship building. The results, both personally and professionally, have been profound. It’s been a great year and I’ve been blessed to better know some really great people.

So I was invited to this wedding industry networking event last night and I almost went…for several reasons, but the foremost was that it was formatted in a ‘speed dating’ style where you sit down with everyone for a few minutes for some ‘speed networking.’ Not that I thought a few quick minutes with these people would really provide deep and meaningful connections or stimulate the desire for others to want to build anything with me, but more so because it simply sounded fun.

I didn’t end up going. But I had prepared a little 3×5 card to hand people instead of my business card, with the Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Want to Get to Know Me. Again, not that I was expecting much from this, but thought it’d be fun and better for people to get to know me better once they went home and read my fabulous reasoning behind wanting to know myself. So I extend this invitation for you to want to get to know me…enjoy!

Robb Davidson - I am Robb Davidson, and I absolutely approve of this accurate list of reasons. Granted there are many many many missing, but this does quite nicely.

Kelly - I agree with Rob, there are so many items missing – but it’s a good start!

Mike - I also agree with Robb, because he is correct and I am very agreeable.

Melanie and Jeffrey are two of the coolest cats you might meet. I feel like they would do really well living in California as laid back as they are…

I met Melanie when I was 16 in the Valley High School volleyball program. We were the two young Tigers on the team, both of us both playing varsity and jv. Then we hooked up again on the west coast years later at Cal St Fullerton as I was doing stats for her as a Titan. Then years after that, she stumbled across my blog and has been following it since. What a small world!

Small yet big enough to support these two and their love and dreams. Mel and Jeff are living in separate states as they study medicine and orthodontics and I was fortunate to catch them together in the Bay a few weeks back while Mel was interviewing at Stanford. Then our first (shooting) location was closed and we had to scramble for another plan. But Mel and Jeff rolled with it, even when they parked a mile a way and were sweating by the time they got to our second portion of the sesh. They’re just cool cats, I tell ya!*

So we enjoyed ourselves for awhile at the Wattle Creek Winery in Ghirardelli Square and made our way over to Crissy Field for some of the prettiest light San Francisco could have offered. I’m SO excited to work with Mel and Jeff again come their Iowa wedding in May!

*some points to consider: 1, No photoshopping was done [to eliminate sweat] in these photos; these two really are just that cool! 2, Liz from Elizabeth Zuluaga Photography joined us joined us for this sesh and is responsible for the awesome kiss shot where Mel’s pulling Jeff’s tie; thanks Liz! 3, Isn’t Mel so long and lovely? She’s super tall! But so tiny around the waist and I just love it when Jeff wraps his arms all around her and holds her close. Adorbs. And finally 4, I’m obsessed with wine and love it when my clients are too. Thanks Wattle Creek for letting us shoot in your awesome tasting room!

Liz - Why you’re welcome my love! The photos came out awesome Jacks! Thanks again for letting me second shoot for you 🙂 It’s kind of beginning to be my favorite thing.

At the beginning of 2011 I made a goal to read 24 books. After reading 18, I didn’t quite hit it but I still feel great! Because I can make the same goal again for 2012!

I’m going to change it slightly though, and say ‘read 24 books, five of which must come from my shelf.’ BOOM. I have like two shelves full of books I haven’t yet read…okay, maybe one and a half…but still! I keep collecting and my archive is getting backlogged. So I’ll be aiming for 24 again, but five of them must be in my possession already. 😛

In 2010, my goal was ‘read more.’ I found it helped to specify the goal with a number this year, as I definitely read more in 2010, but have no idea exactly how much. Also, in 2010 my reading was dominated by books on business and personal development which is great. However, I found myself more motivated and stimulated by mixing in some memoirs and fun fiction. Sometimes business writing can be a bit dry and changing it up this year really helped me move through.

What’s one of your goals for this year?

someone asked me recently if i was a top squeezer or bottom squeezer with my toothpaste. or a random squeezer roller? to which i responded ‘i’m a middle even squeezer.’ he didn’t really understand so i tried to further explain. ‘no, no roll.’ but i don’t think he really got it.

which has got me thinking, why do people worry so much about how others do? does it make a difference? why is it that we care?

our situations are all so diverse and complex in entirely different ways. so when someone squeezes their toothpaste from the top, what warrants a raised eyebrow from the dude who squeezes from the bottom? what difference does it make? we’re all different. differently. so there’s really no justice in judging one another and our differences. right? because everyone’s teeth differ!

that’s why they use dental records, ya know. no two are the same.

so. before i ramble off on this random tangent too much, i think my point is that we judge too much. i’m totally interested in the things people do, and think our differences do matter. but ultimately, our brows are too often raised too high. we judge too much.

so when you go to brush your teeth later today, take a moment to reflect on someone you’ve placed judgement on recently. then let it go. squeeze it out. it’ll do us all some good.
