I was on the phone the other day with a long time client and dear friend, explaining why I wouldn’t trust a photographer that charges $1500 for a wedding. She was price shopping for her newly engaged son.

I’m sure there are good photographers out there at that price, I told her, but are they professional, do they have the right equipment, do they have proper licensing, insurance and software, do they work with other quality professionals, do they have the experience and stability to not just document your important day, but to provide you with a wedding photography experience you’ll be happy to remember forever? Chances are likely, at $1500, they don’t. Running a photography business isn’t cheap, and there’s a huge investment of time and energy into learning how to do it well and right, time and time again. Beyond the experience and obvious ability to take good photos, it takes an immeasurable amount of heart and soul. I’m not sure the folks who charge $1500 for a wedding photography package understand the depth of all that just yet.

This is not to talk smack on those folks at those rates. This is just to emphasize the fact that you get what you pay for. My partner and I learned that recently with another service based business. It’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Or in my case this afternoon, a beautiful bar of chocolate that won’t.

In the mail today came a box from one of the professionals that Lovato Images does business with, that helps us provide our clients with not just beautiful images and prints, but excellent service too. Some tea, some chocolate, a sweet thank you note for the business, and a great reminder to continue the quality service and image creation that we do. It’s not just about creating beautiful images for us here at Lovato Images, it’s about creating a good experience with you too. And that dear clients and friends, you can trust.

Man today has felt like a day in the trenches. I had some technical difficulties loading new content to my site, upon which I discovered a segment of my site had been hacked. Awesome. Then a setting got changed on my cell phone that affected the messaging on my computer. So that’s great. Then I realized a glitch in my organization has my marketing material all over the place. It’s also that time of the month. So much fun happening today.

I dislike days like this. I felt so bogged down and helpless. And don’t even get me started on the un-productivity levels. I was ready to throw in the towel.

Instead I went for a walk. Had a ton of thoughts. Decided to come back to my desk and write. I’m going to make something of this day damnit, even if it’s just a few blog posts and some journaling. I’ll reshoot for a solid day tomorrow.

Marriage is a life long journey that thrives on love, commitment, communication, trust, respect, patience and companionship. It begins and endures on a solid foundation built by family. I was wonderfully reminded of that this weekend as I perused through decades of my own family’s photos. To all of our newly engaged couples, congratulations! I am so excited thinking about construction on the next layer of your foundations. #ittakesavillage

As I sit on the edge of this year, with slippers on my feet and tangles in my hair, I wonder how I got so lucky to live the way I do. The morning light warms the corners beside the windows and my black drink warms the inside of me. You’ve been cold to us, 2016. Despite all the Goodness, much of you has been so cruel.

Lives you took. Friendships you lost. Relationships you severed and hope you ripped from our hands. I sat in heaps staring at the blurred sky through watered eyes and wondered how things ever got so wrong. More than once. I wondered why people were put in their positions and what purpose all of the muck is to serve.

He stands in the doorway stroking his chin. She sits on the couch scratching hers. And my mind can’t help but return to all the Goodness. Even if some things don’t get better, I know we’ve got it so good within these maple viewed walls. I’ll keep focusing on that. One black sip at a time.

Traci and I met at the fresh age of seven, inside the artistic doors of Mrs. Dibble’s first grade class. We immediately hit it off, the young Aquarian Aries match that we [unknowingly at that time] were. She, this exquisite little doll of a beauty, and I, her head and a half taller new best friend, were attached at the hip (or, my hip to her torso anyway). We remained that way for many years.

And as the years flew by, Traci grew into a beautiful woman and fell incredibly in love with Donny and his little Zoe. A life together began to build and they decided to tie the knot next year, just as Zoe turns seven herself.

It was magical photographing my childhood best friend with her husband to be and darling daughter as the sun warmed the [finally] wet grounds around Back Bay last week. So nostalgic to see Zoe at the same stage of life that we were when Traci and I first met. I don’t think either of us were as spirited then as Zoe is now though. I mean really, come their wedding day, Zoe may just dance her way into more photos than the bride. And I don’t think any of us will be mad about it.
