So I’ve never done this before on my blog, but so many of you have inquired lately ‘How was your trip to Greece!‘ I figured I should do a post with a handful of images and stories to share. Typically when I travel, I’ll do a post or two with a small collection of images that I like best. But this time, I thought to do more of a compilation with captions of my recent family vacation abroad, so you can get a good taste of what we ourselves tasted.

We started on Santorini, Greece’s beautiful volcanic island in the South Aegean. And my word, it was beautiful! Almost everywhere on the island you can see water surrounding the land, and the views, combined with the gentle but strong gusts of wind, were breathtaking. We took a boat out of Athens early the first morning and made it to our little haven by mid afternoon. We spent a lot of time relaxing in the beautiful home we rented, built into a cave in the cliff. But anyone that knows me knows that I can’t lounge for too long, so I went out and rented an ATV to explore the island on my own. My brother Nick, joined me for a few hours the first day, but I cruised around the rest of the time solo, stopping to take pictures here and there of the beautiful arid island landscape.

One evening as the sun started to sink into our Sea, we had a little family photo shoot while sipping on iced Ouzo and drawing on cigars. We sat in our ‘backyard’ and talked about relationships and communication and traveling and growing and everything between. It was family bonding at it’s finest: Greek style.

Greek coffee is the best! And so is Greek salad. We had our own kitchen so we bought tomatoes, cucumber and feta and had a salad with almost every meal.

The boat ride on the Aegean was a little rough. I’ll leave it at that, but it was totally worth it! That’s a view of Fira from the port, the town we stayed near.

Here’s my parents’ bedroom door at our home in Fira Stefani. We each had our own rooms with private entrances. Amazing.

That little circular ‘deck’ was just outside of Nick and my bedrooms. Our own private little deck away from the massive one upstairs…

There aren’t many beaches in Santorini, as much of the land that borders water are high cliffs. So I was stoked to find a secluded beach down a random dirt road that I had all to myself (on right).

Just down this road (on the left) I found another secluded beach with just three of us there; then there was a small stairway (image on right) I found a few hundred yards off from a populated beach where I climbed into the Sea and took a swim by myself.

Wine made by a little woman selling herbs and jams by the road. Bought a bottle with my new friends Reed and Emily to drink on the beach…

She gave us samples to try for free! She spoke little English, but we had fun talking with her and trying her creations. Delish!

I realize that planking is soooo 2011 but we had to bring it to Greece, just in case…

Then Carol tried her own ‘plank’ and we all about had a heart attack as she fought balance on her next move. This ledge overlooks the edge of the cliff.

    Carie - Jackie-
Personal posts are wonderful. Thanks SO much for sharing. Never been to Greece so this was a great glimpse! Is it weird if I say you look fab laid out in your bikini?! Ha! You do!!! Love this post. Thanks again.

‘How do you write the speech for your best friend’s wedding?’ the maid of honor pondered aloud during her toast last Friday. The sun had sunk outside as The Casino in San Clemente reception ballroom warmed in a candlelit bath of yellow and purple light, creating an exquisite scene for a celebration. The day’s preparations and getting ready were finally over, the tearful and heartfelt vows had been exchanged, and Katelyn and Darius were finally husband and wife.

The two met in college with a friendship that sprouted first then developed into what some might call a fling. After graduation they parted ways, and it wasn’t until the Tustin Chili Cook Off 2008 that they ran into one another again. Sparks flew. Emotions ran high. And the couple finally forged in all the romantic ambiance the little street fest had to share.

Since that fateful festival, their relationship has developed and new versions of friendship and love have sprouted around those roots first formed in college. They’ve learned how to live together and deal with life’s trash together and function fluidly as a pair through constant communication and companionship. As they shared personally written vows in the Casino yard, new seeds were planted in the garden of Katelyn and Darius that will no doubt bear fruitful and perennial pieces to their marriage.

So like Meghan, the MOH, I often wonder ‘how do you explain all the goodness of a good friend’s wedding?’ And sometimes I find that writing with light is easier than writing with words…

Katelyn’s MOH put a picture on Facebook that morning with the bride and her French press. Does that ruin the tradition if her groom sees?

While I was pondering that, I had to resist the yummy muffins the St. Regis had for the girls’ breakfast. I resisted eating them anyway…

Sometimes inspiration comes easy. I hear it in the wind rustling the branches outside my office door, I see it in the hot afternoon light that beams through my transparent curtains, I feel it in the morning chill that greets my bed pressed skin as I head across my back patio to work at 7am.

Other times inspiration eludes me. I miss it as I scurry from bus to train to city block in the city that never sleeps. I miss it while dancing in a sea of white cloaked Nicaraguans on the Pacific’s edge. I miss it as I hustle around Rome’s cobblestone streets wondering what I’m to do next.

Most times, inspiration reveals itself to me at exactly the right time. I may feel like I have writer’s block or like I’m lacking in entrepreneurial direction or that the negative is fighting too hard for control. But when I’m ready, my mind opens and the inspiration comes flooding in. I wish I was always ready, but life comes at you in waves, and you’ve got to ride with it as you can.

Anyway. I’ve been back from my last inspiration drenched journey a few weeks now, and I’ve yet to sit down with the images I shot abroad to play. The State side inspiration has been mocking me at this dry desk since my return. But you all keep asking to see. So I’ll work on riding that wave for you soon…

Abs - This photograph reminds me of pictures from long ago, it looks aged and soaked in history… very nice!

Angela scheduled a portrait session months ago; her aging grandmother, lovingly known as Nona, was expecting some other family in town so a shoot with 5 generations present was totally in order. This one was going to be fun. Then Nona’s health slipped a little, as did her usually peppy mood. Angela thought it best to wait for our shoot until things were going better.

Then Nona fell asleep in the Lord and Angela’s plans for better things changed completely. Angela was very close with her Nona, and losing her was devastating, as any death can be. But Ange is a strong woman and knows that the show must go on. So she’s been going on and working towards positive improvement in her life. She’s (finally!) begun to build her designer jewelry business, taking steps to improve her own health, and focusing on the relationships that mean most to her…

Like her relationship with Bill! Angela and Bill have been together seven years and despite the recent loss in their family, it is so clear that this couple is happily in love. Bill just gets Angela, and it’s a beautiful connection to observe. He holds her like he will protect her forever. He looks at her like he’ll adore her forever. And he knows what to say to make her laugh like he’ll keep her laughing forever. With a focus on this relationship, it’s easy to see things going better!

Bill and Angela brought along their two babies to our Santiago Canyon in Orange photography sesh: their beloved pup Zeva and their bangin’ new ride, the Camaro. Angela also brought Nona’s cross to still include her and it was lovely to see Angela enjoying better things. Focusing on the positive and working towards more of it is a choice, and I’m so glad Angela chooses it.

Rebekah and Ben have a love that is unique. Pure. Peaceful. Full of purpose. I suppose that’s what develops after ten years…if you’re lucky. Or maybe if you just work hard at it…

And Rebekah and Ben have definitely worked hard. They’ve been together a decade and after just an hour with them, I understand so much about understanding and patience and compromise and all the communication that goes into supporting a marriage. These two make it look easy, but you can tell there is great depth to all that they are.

Now Rebekah and Ben are about to work together more than ever before as they welcome their first child to the world. I couldn’t be more confident in a couple that I hardly know because I just know this child is going to be raised in a strong and faithful home. This maternity photography session was fun for me on many levels. Thanks so much for the opportunity to document this moment in your lives, Rebekah and Ben, and thanks for being such an inspiration to such tremendous love!
