Steve Jobs died today and I can’t help but mourn the loss.

You all know his story. Sharp and driven kid quits college and starts business in garage, soon thereafter to become 25-year-old millionaire. Then to be fired from his own company. To start another. Eventually leading him back to the original fruits of his labor and putting him on top as CEO and visionary of quite possibly the greatest tech company in the world. I’d say so anyway. It’s definitely my favorite.

I’ve been using Apple products for as long as I’ve been able. Apple’s always been my preference and the wheels and wings their products have given me to launch my business, my passion and my life have provided more momentum and flights than most else. The Macintosh computer was born the same year as I was and when I discovered that years ago, I felt a stronger connection to the computer that I loved so much. But this isn’t about me…

Or maybe it is. Maybe I just want to use my voice to express my gratitude to such an innovative and inspirational man. He lived the dream, man. He had ideas and he made them happen. He thought ahead of the curve and rolled out beyond it. He changed the way the world works for the better. We all work better because of him and it is my hope that his colleagues will continue on his path in creating more grand goodness to follow. It is my hope that I can follow too.

Steve Jobs changed the world. And the world is quiet tonight as we honor his years and pray for peace at his passing.

So whatever happened to the throwing of rice, bubbled bon voyage, running out to the limo through the crowd, great grand exit of the bride and groom after a wedding? There’s the grand entrance every time. But what about the grand exit???

I understand that times have changed. I understand that certain traditions don’t hold the same meaning as they once did and some couples would rather dance til the sun comes up with their friends than rush off after the cake’s been served. The exit might not be as important as it was before.

Here’s the thing though, whatever once was, it still remains that the whole wedding celebration is to honor the bride and groom and their union and their new life together. So why shouldn’t we line up and waive and cheer and throw fun stuff at them to wish them off well?

I’ve shot three weddings now in the Midwest and at every one of them, the wedding guests have rocked this tradition. Throwing things at a newly married couple is actually a very old tradition that dates back to ancient Rome (heyo!) and Egypt. The custom is intended to give newlyweds good luck and the items thrown are intended to represent fertility and abundance.

So come on planning brides and grooms: let’s work that cool event back into your celebration! Schedule a time to leave, and let it be before most of your guests. For those of you that know me, you know I’d prefer to rock the dance floor til the music stops but let’s have some fun and send our newlyweds off with style…by throwing stuff at them to wish them the best!

Here’s Julia and Matt running to their car at the end of their wedding on Saturday, shot by yours truly, for the fricken fabulous Robb Davidson Photography of Wheaton.

I’ve known Gretchen and Rupert for 6 years now, and not as awesomely as I feel I should. Let me explain.

We worked together at ZUMA Press and Rupert was one of the IT guys. So naturally, I talked to him daily with a gazillion dumb questions constantly. He always had an answer, quickly and happily. Throughout her time and mine with ZUMA, Gretchen did a number of things. She was kind of like super woman with a heart to help, doing a thousand things at once for ZUMA while still taking time out to work with me with on a school assignment in the midst of her own gargantuan work+school+real life to-do list. This was a couple I thought highly of for sure.

So we worked together. We hung out some together. Went to a few parties together. But after documenting their wedding last Saturday, I feel like I’ve seen a side of Gretchen and Rupert that I wish I would have known years ago.

Gretchen is sweet. Open. Honest. Down to earth yet flying high on ideas and dreams and constant creativity every step of the way.

Rupert is strong. Deep. Kind. The kind that isn’t afraid to be who he is and love how he knows and stay true to him and his woman in every which way.

This past weekend I saw Rupert look at Gretchen in way I’d never noticed before. I saw her lean into him in a way that made me realize the beauty of a love like theirs. A love that is unique yet simple, true yet free, forever yet always right now…

Gretchen and Rupert, thank you so much for opening up to me and trusting me to document your night. After ten years we can finally say Mr. and Mrs. Rupert and Gretchen Harwood! And I’m so happy to be able to say I was there to see you tie that fantastic f!*(#ing knot.

Lina - What a beautiful captured ceremony! I was deeply honored to have been there. Thank you for taking such lovely photographs, and for staying to enjoy the party!

So far this year I’ve traveled to Nicaragua, Napa, Nampa, Tahoe, Chicago and Santa Cruz, with more travel on its way. Specifically today* I’m headed to Chicago again to second shoot a wedding, see a sweet show with some groovy dudes, celebrate the Official Office Opening for my friend’s business and possibly put in a personal portrait session if we can find a pool. Maybe even a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond. Duno if we’ll have time.

I’ve decided that I do really well mixing business with pleasure while traveling, as I’ve done it pretty well every trip this year. I can totally hang, man! The cool thing is, even if I don’t have too much time to experience much of the new towns I visit (due to too much work and not enough time!), I am always able to explore a little with my camera and my two feet which always proves to be relaxing and inspiring and educational all in one. I’m big on walks so naturally it’s one of my favorite things to do in a new place. Just walk around. Breathe in the air. Stop and smell the roses. And sometimes shoot ’em too.

Basically I try to have fun wherever I go. So let’s go somewhere and have a good time. How bout your friend’s wedding? I heard they got engaged and haven’t hired a photographer yet. You should have them call me. 😉

Residential real estate. An industry where you can window shop for your dream home daily and float on big pools with margaritas and call it an open house. Such a sweet gig.

Right? Well, it can be for those that play it right anyway. I’m reading The 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss and he says (amongst many others I’ve consulted with in the past) that you’ve got to automate your work flow as much as possible. Meaning, get a lot of your work out of the way! For most of us sole proprietors, that means hiring others to do the work for you so you can spend your own time doing more valuable and beneficial things. Like window shopping or margarita lounging.

My realtor clients know the value of this, whether they spend their extra time relaxing or not. They understand the value of professional photography and the quality it brings to their own business and service. They don’t want to waste their time doing something that someone else can do faster and with better skill. So they hire me. Woot!

And the really smart ones (who coincidentally, really like margaritas) have taken it one step further and implemented video into their property marketing regime. More on that later…for now…think about how you can reduce some of your weekly tasks and source them out to free up some of your own time. I’m all about saving time and increasing productivity, so do me a favor and think about that today. What can you change to work faster and better for you, without you?

AAaaaannndd a nice property with a nice pool to help your mind wander if you need some inspiration…
