Sometimes you have to put on your favorite pair of heels, an extra layer of eyeliner, and just enjoy life for the evening. A few weeks ago, Lauren and I did just that.

We were up in LA to cover the LCDQ event photography for their Legends 2013 event. Two twelve hour days back to back called for a place nearby to rest our heads the night between. So we shacked up at Petit Ermitage, a boutique hotel tucked in the bustling hills of West Hollywood.

The hotel was charming beyond belief, and one glance at their website I knew we were in for a treat. We decided to go a night early and bring a bottle of wine, heels and a few different shades of lipstick for an evening to relax and just enjoy. We wrapped up our day’s work on our laptops in the room, then lounged poolside, sipped chardonnay in our honeysuckle covered cabana, and celebrated life at our tiny table for two in the pebble pathed garden as the sinking sun soaked the Hollywood Hills. It was the perfect little night off…in the midst of a crazy work week, the perfect evening to sit back and just enjoy.

A few people have noticed my absence here and have requested I get back in the saddle. I have to admit, I’ve been pretty spread thin the last several weeks and blogging has not been making it on my to-do lists. Beyond the recent busy-ness though, sometimes I just struggle with writer’s block and facing these blank blog pages can be formidable.

Usually I love to write and blogging is not only a fun creative task but also an edifying one when the things I share affect others positively. That’s a huge part of why I’m here, you know. To share the Light.

A friend said something to me the other day that made me worry less about writing here, and focus more on just sharing images: ‘What I love about you is you dont have to write to tell a story–your pictures do that for you. In a way most authors couldn’t ever come close to that via spilled ink.’

To which I responded: ‘I often struggle to use ink in an eloquent enough way to describe the way I feel or what was experienced, and I’ve always thought it was because I’m not good enough at writing. You’re right though, my visual story telling can be breathtaking sometimes, just looking at all that emotion wrapped up in one tiny frame tells so much. But it’s more of God’s glory than any artistry I might apply…He gives it to us so good; I’m just the one lucky enough to be there to capture the moment.’

So get ready for some moments, people. I’m ready to share.

Amee and Chris got married at Franciscan Gardens in San Juan Capistrano last month in a heartfelt and harmonious wedding that was centered around prayer. It was absolutely wonderful to be a part of it.

Amee and her mom did most of the planning to create a simple yet elegant event. There were lots of DIY details like the gorgeous Manzanita tree that Amee’s mom put together to stand over them as they married. They just wanted a celebration focused on Chris and Amee and the love they are committing to God.

Without a bridal party, Amee and Chris walked down the aisle hand in hand. They sat together with eyes closed and hearts lifted during the ceremony that consisted of 9 Baha’i readings. The words were full of love and commitment and woven together in a poetic way:

O my Lord! These two bright orbs are wedded in Thy love, conjoined in servitude to Thy Holy Threshold, united in ministering to Thy Cause. Make Thou this marriage to be as threading lights of Thine abounding grace, and luminous rays of Thy bestowals, that there may branch out from this great tree boughs that will grow green and flourishing through the gifts that rain down from Thy clouds of grace.

The ceremony ended with a breathtaking chant in Farsi that was sung by Amee’s aunt. I put down the camera for a moment to close my own eyes and take it all in as chills tickled my arms. I just love what I do, and getting to experience these intimate events with such fabulous people as Amee and Chris and their families is the most delicious cherry on top of my ‘why.’

As you may have noticed, I haven’t blogged much in the past few weeks. This is because business has been cuh-RAY-zee. I had 22 shoots at 22 locations in 10 days and between shooting, taking care of my clients, editing and trying to live my life all at the same time, I honestly haven’t had much time for blogging. Forgive me.

And to elaborate on craziness and the forgiveness that often needs to be included, I’ve got to take a moment to speak about the greatest teacher on the subject I’ve ever known: my mother.

Yesterday she turned a page, closed a chapter, and started a new. I went over after the craziness of our days had settled and we shared a drink and caught up on our recent life adventures. She spoke little of herself, and asked question after question, more interested in me and my story than reveling in the 6 decades of her own.

I felt bad for not making more time for her or something more special on her birthday, but she quickly assured me the celebration would be this weekend when the whole family was together. Not to worry. I’m not worried.

A few months ago she talked to me about this birthday, and told me she was ready to do more for herself. She’s ready to worry less about what others think and concentrate more on being comfortable and happy herself. And I really hope she’s ready for that and willing to actually do it. You see, my mother is the most selfless, gracious, giving, generous and loving woman I’ve ever known. She gives and gives and gives and I know the riches she carries go deeper than the fattest bank account or the most precious stone. But I hope she slows down and takes time for herself throughout the next several decades, in the midst of all life’s craziness. I hope she wears her most comfortable shoes in the miles she’s still to walk. Then I hope she takes them off at the end of the day and relaxes without worry. Because LIFE.IS.GOOD. It can get crazy, but keeping your head and heart calm are the key. So take it, Mom, take the key, take the time, take the forgiveness with you… and go on with your awesome self. YOU are amazing. And I promise I’ll try to slow down too.

Happy, HAPPY, Birthday.

Rosie and Roderick hired me for their wedding photography what seems like many moons ago. We’ve kept in touch through the obvious means (Facebook, Twitter, what up!) so I was super stoked to learn of their pregnancy a few months back.

Then! Rosie called me for maternity portraits and I was even more stoked. I love documenting this amazing phase of life. I just think it’s so amazing how the body expands and adjusts to create another human. Rosie was about to pop and said she wanted mostly belly shots, so belly it up we did. She was round and beautiful and there was more warmth and light radiating from her than from the sunset that crisp evening in Laguna.

About to pop she was! Rosie delivered Reagan not even two weeks after we shot this maternity session, so stay tuned for that little bundle of joy coming to a blog near you this summer. 😉
