A few weeks ago a new client hired me to do some property photography, from the air. Jackie’s first helicopter ride, wooo!!!

It’s so wonderful that my career has presented so much opportunity to try new things. Whenever a friend or contact confides that they are discouraged by their job and some lack of challenge or lack of potential for growth, I can’t help but shoot up a quick prayer of gratitude. I’m so thankful that my work at building a business and developing my photographic style is never ending and consistently creating positive change. I get to experience new things and learn more and develop every day. It’s fabulous and I am incredibly blessed.

So a few things I learned about shooting aerial photography:

1. Thank God every moment you think to; helicopters are amazing machines and it’s a gift to be able to fly.

2. Ensure you have all your gear and back up gear; there’s no running to the car for an extra battery once you’re up.

3. Use a high shutter speed to negate camera shake; it’s unsteady up there!

4. Keep a barf bag handy; people are known to get motion sickness.

5. Don’t puke in the wind.

Natalie and I met fortuitously on the rooftop of a bar in Austin, TX during South by Southwest earlier this year. Our mutual friend introduced us as we danced amidst a crowd of show-goers above the city buzzing with an energy that only SXSW can create.

The two of us immediately discovered we had both lived in Fullerton and Natalie lit up with excitement about the possibility of a family portrait session next time she was back in her home town. So after a few months of back and forth and scheduling and rescheduling, we finally nailed down the Jungs to be all in one place at one time for some fun photos with Lovato Images.

We met at Irvine Regional Park for the family photography session on a gloriously gloomy morning. I was happy about the amazing light, the Jungs were happy just to be spending time together and we were all happy to be out of this crazy heat wave for a bit.

So we created some cool photos with this fantastically love-able family and some amazing natural light photography. Some the Jungs will surely cherish forever. Glad grooving at a show on an Austin rooftop could produce such a fab photo opp.

PS–don’t the Jungs look fabulous in their fun colored clothes? They did their homework and read the information page to prepare for a Lovato Images portrait session.

As an artist, I am constantly seeking opportunities to grow and expand and nourish my creative soul. There is so much beauty out there that stimulates me in so many different ways; I am always wanting to see, feel and know more of it. So lately I’ve been working on some personal projects to facilitate more for these needs.

So this project started out with a bunch of Chinese lanterns conveniently hanging in my backyard. I had lent some time and talent to a friend for a personal shoot of her own, and with the glorious globes lit up that night, I knew I had to take advantage of the gorgeous natural light. But how? I had to think fast, because my friend wanted the lanterns back that weekend, so I put out a post on Facebook to see what I could find.

And in searching for a female to photograph, I found three! A 4 year old, a 24 year old and a 44 year old all volunteered to model for my personal project that hadn’t yet breached conception. So with the addition of three more minds to my now gestating project, I began to develop the story…

What story do you see told here?

As the sun began to creep its way to our SoCal sky line this morning, I stared out of my AA 2A window in awe. Los Angeles still glittered with its tungsten night lights in the darkness of a restless weekend. But as our plane climbed over the Pacific, the horizon had its own orange gleam that grew brighter and lighter by the minute.

The pilot swung left and down and around our Orange County we went. I gazed over Newport and John Wayne, then up the 55 to my own Orange and through the canyon of my favorite Laguna as the land brightened to blue and green.

I thought more than once to grab my camera that was accessibly stowed under the seat in front, but couldn’t seem to tear my eyes from the scene. It was truly magnificent watching the colors change then seeing the sun beam at me as we shared the same sky. Sometimes, I thought, moments need to be just mine.

And what a way to start a journey. My family and I took off this morning for the first family vacation we’ve planned since I was 14. I’m looking forward to sharing a beautiful trip with the three most important adults in my life. I’m excited to experience a culture that feels so close to home yet comes from a country so far away. I’m anxious to create some new images with such stunning landscapes to come.

But right now I’m happy to bid ado to my home dear SoCal with such a mindful moment, rising with the sun.
