A WEDDING FILM IS…

The start of something wonderful

The history that your unborn children will see and hear

The crack in your voice during the vows

The speech from a proud father

The break dancing that your high school buddies do after dinner

The dance you share with grandpa…

The living memory of a beloved family member

A message from long ago…

Video once was a curiosity and oftentimes a luxury. Now, video is an established must-have for the bride that truly honors her own memories, and those of her family old and new. If you have ever thought that you just can’t afford to have a wedding film, I will be the first to tell you that you can’t afford NOT to have one. When it comes down to it, your photos and wedding film are the only insurance that your wedding day will never be forgotten. And only one of those records the sights and sounds.

As a photographer, I understand and appreciate the value of a good wedding videographer and creative film from your special day. I hope that you can too.

An exerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit, read during Christine and Ben’s wedding:

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.

“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

“I suppose you are real?” said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled.

“The Boy’s Uncle made me Real,” he said. “That was a great many years ago; but once you are Real you can’t become unreal again. It lasts for always.” “

And how appropriate to be read at the marriage of one of the most real couples I know. Cheers to you, Christine and Ben. May you have many [really amazing] years together.

    Kelly - Awesomely awesome!

    Karen - Absolutely gorgeous pictures!

Sometimes I feel a little disrespectful when a mother or father is talking about one of their children and I can’t help but say ‘My dog does the same thing!,’ or ‘That happens all the time with Chloe!‘  :: sheepish smile ::

But respectfully, my dog is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It was totally random that we came together, and getting a dog was not something I had ever planned or premeditated by any stretch. It was a spur of the moment decision that landed me with the greatest teacher, friend and lover I’ve ever known.

You see, Chloe is 100% dependent on me. I’ve never known such responsibility. Chlos Puff is 100% in love with me. I’ve never experienced such devotion. This schmeedly schmaddle is always there for me and constantly aware of me and I’ve never felt such understanding. The Chlos du Bois is 90% obedient to me (She is her mother’s daughter, after all. She’s gotta push the limits sometimes.) I’ve never had such control. Yet, I recognize her life span is just a fraction of mine, and that anything can happen at any time and I’ve become super conscious of savoring each moment.

I know that children are an entirely different ball game and the learning and loving and friending will bring a completely different level of understanding later in life when I take on that mother role. But Chloe is my little girl now and my life is so rich and so full because of her presence in it.

So in honor of savoring the moment, I called up the ever fabulous Lauren of JL Photographers to photograph myself and the poodle puff. Because life is happening now. And I think it rather important to have some beautiful photographs of myself and the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Don’t you think?

Be sure to check out Lauren’s post with more images on her site, here.

Abbie - this is great! you both look amazing, as usual! is it weird that sometimes your beauty takes my breath away Miss J?
    xoxo

Often when brides and grooms are booking their wedding photography, budget constraints come into play. Obviously. This is only the biggest party they’ve ever thrown, so naturally money is an issue.

So often I hear people say, ‘oh we don’t need another photographer,’ or ‘we don’t need more images’ or just straight up ‘we don’t want to pay for another shooter.’ But let me tell you folks, it is worth every extra penny you might have to pinch and here’s why:

1. Having a second photographer on your wedding day provides an additional set of eyes, an additional view and an additional creative contribution to your wedding photography images. When the main photographer is busy with the girls getting ready, the second photographer can be with the guys. While the main shooter is photographing portraits, the second can be focusing on details. While the main looks at the dress one way, the second sees it an entirely different way, and so on and so forth.

2. A second photographer provides extra assurance that your day will get covered without a hitch. I’ve heard of photographers tripping and breaking bones, getting sick from dinner and needing frequent bathroom breaks, falling in the fountain and damaging a camera, etc. These are awful and rare accidents but they can happen. Having a second shooter there covers the main photographer’s butt should something go awry.

3. With the support of a second shooter, the main photographer is allotted more time to think in new and creative ways. As a main shooter myself, I love having a second photographer to chat things over with, to rely on to grab some images over there while I’m over here, and to get another angle of the important moments (like the walking down the aisle and the kiss). It’s a huge help to have an another photographer in many ways.

4. ‘Cause I know what I’m talking about and I say so!!! 🙂

Here’s some second photographer images I shot last year with the super awesome Robb Davidson Photography in Chicago. Robb claims he is rockstar (which, he totally is) and can do it without a second shooter (which, we all can if abso nec), but look at all the good images he would have missed out on from Tara and David’s wedding in Wheaton had I not been there to rock it with him! SO worth it!

Men are visual creatures. This, we know. And as much as I am a proponent of a woman’s personal growth and confidence, I know how valuable it is for a man to have a beautiful image of his woman.

::insert Lovato Images boudoir photos advertisement here::

So Kia wanted to do something special for her husband, Chad. It is their 9 year anniversary after all. Kia had already inquired about a boudoir shoot for herself seven months ago, however, she knew it’d be an amazing gift for her husband. They’ve been together for 14 years (married for 9) and he’s seen his wife through it all, but there’s nothing like that saucy Lovato Images Light. 🙂 So we got together a few weeks ago to create some boudoir pictures unlike any he’s ever seen. Because even though Chad already has a beautiful image of his Kia, these boudoir photos are a tangible keepsake that will hang on their walls for daily doses of her awesomeness. 😛

Happy anniversary Chad and Kia. May you celebrate many more years together.
