When I met Roderick and Rosie back in December, I immediately felt at ease. They had great smiles. They seemed simple. Sweet. Then they encouraged me to let Chloe in on our meeting and any dog lover is a totally a friend of mine. Chloe sat on Roderick’s lap most of our meeting and I knew these two were good people.

You see, Roderick and Rosie are the type of people that make you feel warm on a chilly day; they are the type of people you want to meet for Friday happy hour when you’ve had a rough week. Their smiles, their warmth, their generosity…help you forget about lugging life for awhile. Roderick and Rosie care deeply about helping others in any which way. It was a gloomy day when we met and they helped brighten my day right away. After a few hours with them, I was walking a little lighter and breathing a little easier.

Then came their wedding day and easy breathing was all around. Smiles were constant. Warmth was contagious. And the peaceful, easy feeling they left me with back in December danced around with all of their guests. Roderick took the mic for a moment at the beginning of the reception and said how thankful he was to marry his best friend, the most beautiful woman he’d ever met with the most beautiful heart he’d known. A heart of gold, he said. Rosie’s eyes glittered as she reflected that gold right back.

Some might have called it a gloomy Saturday, but Roderick and Rosie brightened up their Corpus Christi church and the Fairmont Hotel as would a room filled with pure gold.

Here’s a sneak peak from the first half of the day that we showed at the reception…

Rooz - killing it as usual.

I am a lifestyle photographer. I work best in ambient light with subjects who are open to opening themselves to my camera and I. I work best opening up to real life. My best work comes from outdoor sessions when the breeze whispers through our hair and the sun kisses our shoulders and there’s laughter and excitement and truth. It’s honest imagery. And that’s what works best for me.

But sometimes I’ll get a call to go grab a headshot of this CEO, or a portrait of that board member, or a quick shot of a new client that is dealing with this new thing. Corporate stuff. With busy people. Who don’t have time to listen to the breeze or accept kisses from the sun. They have corner offices with windows. They have coffee in their car and lunch at their desk. That’s how it works best for them.

Because we don’t always have time for breeze convo or sun sweetness isn’t to say that fabulous imagery isn’t possible though. It’s fabulous when walk into an awesome venue like the Key Club, with a really rad production manager like Josh, with the backing of my fabulous client and creative director Gabe and know it’s going to be a synch to get a bangin’ portrait in no time at all.

Exhibit A.

We had about 15 minutes to set up and about 15 minutes to shoot here and we’re all happy with what we got.

A quick post on quick portraits seemed relevant today…as I’ve only got time for quickness these next two weeks. As some of you may recall, a Lovato Images Groupon deal that ran six months ago expires on June 7, so Lovato Images is totally slammed with all the Grouponers trying to get their session in before expiration. Please be patient with me as I have very little office time in the next few weeks and beyond a gazillion portrait sessions, I will probably only be focusing on trying not to pull my hair out. That’s how it’s going to work best for me (until June 7!).

Rooz - this is awesome!!! so we now have a key club connection right? 😉

This is from an instant message conversation I had with a friend a few weeks ago. She’s struggling to find a balance between building her photography career (her dream) and keeping a steady pay check coming in through her non-photo related day job (her work). I think you can substitute ‘photography’ for whatever you might be struggling with and apply this conversation to yourself. A lot of us struggle with our work and what we feel we really should be doing or want to be doing. But it’s all about finding balance…and you gotta find your own…

follow your heart, girl
a lot of people are totally happy working their 9-5’s and doing photography on the side
as a hobby sometimes. sometimes for some extra cash.
sometimes as a whole second full time job.
not everyone’s cut out to run their own photography business.
and there’s nothing wrong w that.
find your own way.

if you wanna quit your job and move in with your parents and try to find out if you’re cut out for full time photography or whatever else you might be cut out for, do it. if you wanna take a job that isn’t photo related but pays well and has benefits and try to figure out the photo thing on the side, do that. no one’s going to judge you either way.
it’s gotta be YOUR way.

and you can make it work.
but you gotta find your own way to make it work.

God certainly knows I’ve had my fair share of struggles. But I’m figuring out my balance, one day at a time. And sometimes that means taking time off to sit down and think. Sometimes that means consulting with friends. Or sometimes that means putting two dudes in a tree and calling it art. And any which way I figure out how to find my own way, I’m totally okay with that…

Laycee Lemons - Amen lady. Well said. “Find your way…, like, starting a photography business while going to school to become a nurse and now working part time at Starbucks!” I’m finding my way lady. And I love it. Thanks for the reminder to rock it.
Love two dudes in a tree. Love you stance. Love your outfit. Love you.

Mike McCaleb - You’re. So. Rad. The way that you find is completely unique to you, and staying true to your nature and personality will just make it work. Breakfast club!

Rooz - i love this. and you. and your photography. and chloe. and a bunch of other stuff about you.

Alicia and Hans somewhat remind me of Dharma and Greg. Remember that show? Dharma was the cute, quirky blonde that breathed freedom into every movement she made, while her handsome husband Greg was the straight-up, hardworking, honest business dude. She was paints and passion, he was numbers, charts and charm.

Now Alicia is definitely much more than just paints and passion…but she is such a beautiful little thing that brings such warmth and light into every room she walks, I couldn’t help but draw the comparison. Because even though I’ve technically never been in the same room as Dharma (altho I have with Jenna Alfman!), she always had a funny way of leaving me feeling warm and happy inside. And Alicia leaves me feeling the same way.

Then there’s Hans. Tall, dark and handsome Hans who is in sales and could sell me a crazy expensive power drill if he tried (I don’t have/need/want tools). He’s a little quiet compared to Alicia, but when he looks at her, I know he’d move mountains to keep her happy. He knows her warmth better than anyone, and he gives his all to warm her right back.

Basically, Alicia and Hans are a really cool couple. We shot in and around their sweet apartment overlooking Second Street in Long Beach. I had so much fun, I kinda wanna hang out with them again. Especially with their dog, Jackie (sweet name, huh!).

AndrewD - Some really great shots here Jackie! love the vintage looking yellower shot. These could easily be high end advertising shots, you ever think of selling your shots to shutterstock or gettyimages? you could make some good money on those sites in addition to the initial client payment. Just a thought.

Erica Gross - I love the photos!! You guys both look so happy…..beautiful as always Alica!!

I had never met Nina or Anthony. I had never even so much as spoken to them on the phone. So when I pulled up to meet them for breakfast the day before their Chicago wedding, I was stoked to be able to recognize them beyond their clothing the next day!

Then they walked in all smiles and total relaxation. They had a million things to do with less than 24 hours to do it all…call the venue about this, write thank-you notes about that, meet the girls for yada, make sure yada, host the rehearsal yada yada and somehow try to sleep a few hours somewhere between. I would have been in a fluster. But they weren’t. They were calm and cute. They’ve been together 10 years. So to say they were comfortably on the same page would be a huge understatement. They ordered the same thing for breakfast, for gosh sakes. So their comfortability swept over me and I knew the next day would be fabulous.

I’m so happy that Anthony’s sister, the ever fabulous portrait photographer Lisa Scarsi, based here in So Cal called upon me for the task of documenting her little bro’s big day. It was an exceptionally fabulous day, and here are just a few reasons why:

1. Nina, the bride, was a calm, collected, little bundle of joy. SO easy to work with. (reason 1, have or be a relaxed bride)

2. Robb, my fantastically talented shooter delivered capital A-awesomeness. (reason 2, have not one, but two awesome shooters!)

3. I tend to bring good weather with me when I travel. So not only was it much warmer than it’d been all winter in the Chicago area (so they told me), the chilly weather was suppressed behind a cloud cover that couldn’t compete with the most expensive softbox ever made. In laymans terms, the lighting was bomb-diggity-delicious. (reason 3, hire me. cause I bring the good weather, duh)

4. Robb and I shot with prime lenses only. Wanted to try something new and develop creative expansion. Success. (reason 4, make sure your photogs are creatively awesome!)

5. I was well rested. (reason 5, no one likes the lack-o-sleep-crankies!)

There are like 25,000 other awesome things I could say about Nina and Anthony’s wedding day, but perhaps I’ll save them for the full post I do once editing is done. For now, just a quick set from the slideshow Robb threw together for the Crystal Sky Banquets reception.

Lisa Scarsi - I just saw all the photos and they are, in the simplest of words, amazing. There is no way I can thank Jackie (and Robb who chipped in at the last minute) enough for the perfect capture of a perfect day. Jackie I am so lucky to know you both personally and professionally. You rock!
