Jett just turned one and to celebrate, his parents decided to buy him his very first cake (and an awesome photographer to capture his first taste)!

They wanted to shoot at their Anaheim Hills home and I was stoked on that idea. I love to shoot in my clients homes as it adds such a personal and intimate element. I feel like it tells more of their story being in their own space.

So we started with some full family photos, doggies included. Then we gave Jett his first balloons and cake. A miniature party for a miniature man! He ripped off his shirt (or, his mom did) and had at it. It was adorable watching him figure it out and have fun. I’m not sure who enjoys the cake smash more, the kid or the adults! Or in this case, maybe the dogs?

Anyway, Jett is one of the cutest one year olds I’ve ever seen. I was totally smitten with his sweet little face, contagious laugh and inquisitive eyes. It was such a joy to photograph him and help tell this portion of his story…

I was supposed to do a family portrait session Sunday night with Buzz and his brother, Woody. Their parents decided they needed family photography as soon as they discovered Buzz’s lymphoma was as advanced as it was; the sweet Weimaraner would not live much longer. But Sunday afternoon I got a tearful call from Buzz’s mom that he wasn’t doing so good. Hopefully he’ll be better in the morning and we can do the family portraits Monday night.

But Monday morning didn’t bring progress with it, so they took Buzz to the vet to lay him down for the last time.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this, and sift through the images we were fortunate to capture last week when I met them at the dog park. Four year olds Buzz and Woody were brothers and partners from the start. They were the perfect pair and their parents seemed to worry more for Woody than for themselves.

But from any position it is awful to lose a family member. I’m just glad I was able to document a few of Buzz’s last moments as the energetic, happy dog he was. This experience has inspired me to do more work with families who are saying goodbye to a beloved canine. More information to come there.

To Buzz and Woody’s parents, may Buzz’s love continue to hold onto you during this difficult time. May his memory be eternal.

Jewelry is an extended expression of who we are. Angela of Dulce Designs knows this and lives this more than any individual I know. She creates eclectic and unique designer jewelry from objects one might not think to wear: a map made into beads, an old coin strung into a bracelet or a 9mm bullet shell hung from the ear. Her expressions speak life; her jewelry begets art.

I met Angela on a medical mission we both journeyed to Africa for and have come to know her since. We’ve done a few shoots together and the more I get to know Angela, the more I love. She’s a true artist, one who is inspired by textures and textiles and touch and teachings and everything between. Angela creates wherever she goes and I love that about her.

So her jewelry is now available in a location near you! Start your holiday shopping now! Find her Dulce Designs at Rumble Ruse The Lab in Costa Mesa. Email her or call 714.732.7665 for more details.

I filed this under ‘photography tips’ because my photography tip for you today is to spruce yourself up with some Dulce Designs for your next shoot! 😉

‘The best camera is the one that’s on you,’ says Chase Jarvis, and for most of us these days, that’s our cell phone camera.

At this point most cell phone cameras have completely automatic exposures. This means that all you can do is point and shoot and hope it turns out. Often these automatic exposures have long shutter speeds in order to let more light in, for instance, indoors or at night time and it can result in a fuzzy or blurry image. Sometimes it can look cool but usually we don’t like that, do we!

To help negate the camera shake that creates those blurry shots, find ways to steady your hands and consequently, the camera. There are a number of ways to do this, so I’ll just give you a few ideas, but the point is to get creative with your surroundings…

If you are sitting at a table, always always rest your wrists on the table or elbows if you need to hold the camera higher:photography tipsPINME

Often lower angles are better, so try squatting and resting your arms on your legs:

If you’re shooting close to a subject (like food at dinner or an interesting broken potted plant ::eye roll::), rest your fingers on a nearby surface or the subject itself:

Always use a support to lean your body on like a wall or beam when it’s available:

Seemingly small and easy things to do, but they make such a difference! Remember, the more steady your hand, the more steady the shot!

Happy Shooting! 🙂

I wasn’t the wedding photographer for Chad and Jessica’s Brea wedding earlier this month, but seeing as their creative do it yourself wedding decorations match perfectly with today’s holiday, I thought I’d share some of the details I shot.

Chad and I go way back. Like, before we understood photography back. Well, maybe he did, but I met him when I was first getting my feet wet back in collage. I mean college. We’ve been learning and working together since. Over the years I’ve come to know Chad as one of the most honest, loyal, gracious and giving guys around. And he’s a RAD photographer that has built himself a great career. He’s just great.

Then he met Jessica and I was so excited to see that Chad had finally met his match. Jessica is sweet, loving, Godfearing, generous and gorgeous beyond belief. I knew right away that God made her just for him. And him for her. I love it when I know that.

So I was super stoked to be a guest at this lovely little fall wedding for this beautiful couple. I took my camera to shoot some details for Chad and was so impressed with all the creativity they used in their do it yourself details, that I just had to share. It made for such a fun fall feel with rustic elements that made the church lot look like a picture out of a storybook: Jessica and Chad’s love storybook.

The wedding took place at the Downtown Chapel in Brea, right next door to the Promenade.

The reception was in the field just outside of the Chapel, which was covered in a light blanket of straw and dressed up with rustic florals and tissue paper flowers strung with twinkle lights…

Pumpkins were placed all around, adding the fall touch.

Not so fond of cake, the couple opted for a pie cutting instead, of which they had plenty of homemade pies to share.

Big thanks to Damion for his amazing gift of photography that he’s shared with Chad and I for years. He is responsible for helping launch a lot of the awesomeness that Chad and I are. 🙂 He was the official wedding photog and all portraits of Chad and Jessica are © Damion Lloyd Photography.
